Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Vintage 2010 bottle at Kulminator. Dark brown, almost black with a tan little head. Intense sweet licorice aroma. Aniseed, caramel sweetness. A bit cloying. Nice and rich, but too much on the sweet side, I think.

4th March 2010. Pre ZBF. Cloudy brown beer. No head. Pretty low carbonation. Rich malty beer with a sweet bubblegum undertone. Finishes dry and with some good fruit notes coming through. Very drinkable.

Bottle vintage 2010 shared with Chris at Ebenezer’s. Big thanks for this one. Pours out a dark mahogany topped with a tan head. Aroma was great with lots of fruit, caramel, and spice. Taste was much of the same sweetness, some wood, nutty, and plenty pit fruit.

Bottle. Heavy beer with great similarites with the Pannepot brews, which I find better. Sweet, spicy, licorice and dark fruits.

Bottle. Pours black with a latte coloured head. The aroma has got notes of milk chocolate, wine and some spices. Lots of dried fruit, milk chocolate and orange in the taste. Finishes vinous. This beer succeeds to be sweet without being pushy. Big bodied. I would have like a little more complexity, but I think this one will be great after a couple of years in the cellar.

bottle courtesy of Urbain @ Struise. pours deep mahogany with light off-white head. Finally a quad on the other side of Vleteren. aroma of light bourbon, plenty of dark fruits and candi sugar. flavors, quad palate is outstanding, the addition of the bourbon really adds a nice dimension to the beer especially at this abv style, yet not overtaking the whole profile. Nicely sweet of candi sugar meshing nicely with the dark fruits along with some caramelized notes. Aging a few bottles, this is outstanding and well executed.
