Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

A hazy dark red/Brown beer with a nice crème coulered beer. Rough structured foam, drops slowly in. Aroma: Laulier, liquorice, spicy, malt, sweety and saisins The basic taste (scale from 1 to 5): sweet:2, sour:1, bitter:1. The aftertaste: sweet:2, sour:3, bitter:2. The laulier and the liquorice overruled in the end, als a taste from taninn. Not my kind of beer, but acceptable. Nice label

Draught at Holy Grale Zwanze 11. This is a fantastic Quad. Big body with lots of dried fruit, plum, raisin. Some sweetness. Very enjoyable.

Cloudy brown colour. Very thick, oliy texture. Flavour is quite complex with some rich, dark fruits that leave a sticky sweetness on the lips. The finish is a touch more vinous with a hint of warming alcohol.

Pours dark dark brown with high head, Aromas of dark fruits ,fudge and oranges. I also sense chocolate. Palate is round, lovely and sweet. A bit watery. Alcohol is present but not to much. Taste of orange, brown sugar, some chocolate and hint of oak.

Test vom 12.11.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2013 2010 Vintage bottle@‘t Antwaerps Bierhuiske: very dark brown with a beige head, taste & smell is creamy thick malts, lots of nuts, dark fruits, chocolate, tobacco, slight toffee & caramel, boozy aftertaste, thick & creamy malt-based body, a little rough around the edges but this pretty damn impressive //// tried again on draft, so soft & fruity, more like current Struise style, incredible stuff 4.5 -> 4.8

Tap, in brugge. The taste is so good, definitely better then westy 12 in my opinion. The taste is very similar to westy but you dont get a strong alcohol taste up front and it is very smooth, it has a good finish, filled with a long lasting date and raisin after taste. Really good stuff

Bottle from Beer Planet, Brussels; vintage 2010
Cloudy dark brown color, with generous head, not very persistent. The aroma shows roasted malts and dust. Good body strength, round mouthfeel; dark malts flavor, but also a too strong flavor of liquorice; quite sweet, but the sweetness is correctly balanced by the roasted malts; warming alcohol in the final. Not my favorite one, mainly because of the dust and the liquorice.

Tap at Struise corner, Brugge Dark brown body, light brown head. Aroma is very intense with dark fruits, sugar, lots of almond and vanilla with some wooden bourbon notes. Flavour is really nicely balanced and brings out the almond and bourbon with the nice quadruple heavy background. Oily and smooth finish. Excellent brew!
