Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle from EtreGourmet, shared with Palme. Deep murky brown body, medium beige head. I’ve been waiting for this missing link in my Struise beers; being a huge quad fan my expectations are high for a local tribute to Westvleteren 12. :-) Aroma is caramel, alcohol, raisins, hints of wood and subtle, moss-like herbal tones. Could perhaps have been more pungent, but the blend is elegant. Taste is dense candy sugar tones, hints of figs, dates, raisins and warming alcohol. Very nice and smooth, but compared to the Trappist quads it’s unfortunately not *quite* there. Great stuff though.

Dark brown and hazy. Has an off-white head, medium duration. Aroma of bread, both dark and light. Some notes of dried grapes, spicy too, perhaps pepper. Flavor is mainly sweet, more dark and dried fruit. Long duration. Some nice sugars too. Light bitter finish. Creamy texture and a bit lively carbonation.

11/9/10/11//11

Bottle, cheers MesandSim. This was a grower, the more you drink the better it gets. Pours dark brown with a medium pale brown head. As with all things Struise, complex, lovely and full of flavour. Quite sweet with caramel, some rum, spices, licorice. Another one of those where I have to get some more. If only I could control myself to cellar more instead of drinking them all like a poet on pay day.

Bottled 355ml. Malt accented. Pretty true to the style. Full bodied. Tall, nicely tanned head. Reminiscent of Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock (moss components). Plenty of character. Enjoyable and interesting but far from being great.

Bottle. Dark brown coloured with a beige head. Light roasted aroma of caramel, chocolate and liquorice. Light roasted flavor of chocolate and liquorice. Liquorice was a little off putting

(33cl bottle 2010 vintage thanks to bu11zeye) cloudy rich ruby brown, ring of tan bubbles. Nose of raisin, Belgian yeast, mild funk, alcohol figs, and light chocolate. Taste of alcohol, raisins, dates, nutty, a bit alcoholic, harsh finish and creamy carbonation. Marshmallow linger. Good, but didn’t live up to what I hoped it would be.

Very good black ale with a certain sweetness to it. Somehow it gets old before finishing the first glass, though.

Poured from bottle into pint glass (I know...) Funky smell. A little fishy... am starting to compare all Quads to Rochefort 10 or Westleveteren 12 and frankly - these other "hot" quads fall short. Tastes very similar to Gulden Drak, but a quicker, drier finish. You know - Belgian yeast, candi sugar, yadda yadda. Nothing new here. Apricot, white rasiins, slight fig...fruity is what I’m getting at here. This one needs some laying down. Will cellar the other bottle and see what we see in a few years. For now, not an everyday drinker. Like green bananas. Could be perfect given time. Overly carbonated, not as chewy as it could be. See me after class.
