Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Good dark brown colour with a medium head that leaves very little lacing. Aroma is yeast and brown sugar. Taste is caramel, butter, toffee with a lingering but subtle butter aftertaste. Definitely up there with the more famous Abts.

Bottle at Ørsted Ølbar. Always looking forward to quads from belgian breweries. Poors Chestnut brown with a ruby shade and a medium brown head. Aroma is mainly belgia yeast esters, i pick up plum and cherries, mixed with dark suger and alchohol. It has some minor sweet chocolate notes aswell. Big flavor, well balanced alchohol, yeasty/sugery sweetness with those classic delicious belgian yeast esters. Nice!

Dark mahogany with ruby highlights. Very large tan head. Large bubbles stick to the side, but don’t leave much in the way of lacing. Cereal smell with some burnt sugar. Taste is sweet but with a dry feeling. A little alcohol warmth. Bitter on back. Not bad, but a little too dry and warm for my liking. Might be more suited for the winter, but it’s pretty cool out right now. I could drink it again.

05-JUL-2011, bottle @home, from "Ølbutikken". I open it over the sink, it is Belgian, right? But no, no sink-pour this time...? The inner of the cap is coated with dark yeaty looking stuff. In the glass it is dark brown almost clear with hig light brown lasting head. Nose is alcoholic brown ale-like, with chocolate and charamel. Taste is quite complex with tobaco, chocolate, spices, and dried fruit. Lovely brew.

"Vintage 2010" sweet fruity and brown sugar aroma with lots of roasted malt -- coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and some licorice. other spices as well, maybe nutmeg, plus oak. tons of dried apricots, maybe dipped in brown sugar and chocolate. deep fruit, chocolate, and malty caramel flavor. sweet but not cloying, with a dark, slightly tart fruit finish and roasted grains throughout to balance. pours a thick dirty orange brown with light brown frothy but quickly-receding head. medium body, a bit thin and dry for the style, long sweet/tart/roasty finish with alcohol present. excellent.

Bottle from EtreGourmet, shared with Palme. Deep murky brown body, medium beige head. I’ve been waiting for this missing link in my Struise beers; being a huge quad fan my expectations are high for a local tribute to Westvleteren 12. :-) Aroma is caramel, alcohol, raisins, hints of wood and subtle, moss-like herbal tones. Could perhaps have been more pungent, but the blend is elegant. Taste is dense candy sugar tones, hints of figs, dates, raisins and warming alcohol. Very nice and smooth, but compared to the Trappist quads it’s unfortunately not *quite* there. Great stuff though.
