COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottled@The Chriso Rock The Roof Down pre-GBBF shindig. Reddish brown colour with mediumsized beigeish head. Aroma is caramel, spices, some toffee as well as mild notes of alcohol. Flavour is caramel malts, toffee, spices, some mild alcohol as well as some chocolaty notes as well. Probably needs a bit of time still, but can get even bigger at some point.

[my 6,500th rating]
A lovely dark red chestnut with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is sweet. Lots of plums, hazelnuts, estery yeast, overripe red apples, some slight banana, caramel and a slight hint of milky chocolate. Medium carbonation, lovely creamy mouthfeel with some good dryness. Flavour is very complex, lots of nuances. Mild roasted chestnut, milky chocolate, vinious, caramel, hazelnuts, plums, madeira, port. Long, lingering aftertaste where some great, balanced, grassy hoppiness blendsvery well with all the levels of sweetness. This is really nice and I suspect it will be very, very nice in a few years.

Bottle at Chris O’s ’Raise the Roof" tasting. Brown pour with a beige head. Raisins and figs in the nose. Figs, dates, raisins and dried fruit flavours. Smooth Christmas feel. Sweet, warm finish.

PotjeBier (1640) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JUL 31, 2010
2010 bottle from Kaashoeve Veurne. Dark brown, with off-white head (not lasting too long). Aroma is very sweet at first, with sweetbread, chocolatecake, toffee, and later with some herbs and fruit (raisin, apple). Taste is sweet, sugary, and there is something funky that’s hard to describe. Alcohol is well detectable at first, but seems to mellow a bit later. Finishes with some funky spiciness. Nice, but not great.

Had this on tap at pre-zbf, but sample appeared to be too young. 33cl bottle. Small off-white head over a brow-reddish beer. Aroma is dark fruits, banana. Taste is sweet, again dark fruit, raisins, banana and spices. In the end a pleasant and boozy taste kicks in. Mouthfeel is creamy and rich. Alot better then the sample I had on tap.

Vintage 2010 bottle at Kulminator. Dark brown, almost black with a tan little head. Intense sweet licorice aroma. Aniseed, caramel sweetness. A bit cloying. Nice and rich, but too much on the sweet side, I think.

4th March 2010. Pre ZBF. Cloudy brown beer. No head. Pretty low carbonation. Rich malty beer with a sweet bubblegum undertone. Finishes dry and with some good fruit notes coming through. Very drinkable.

Bottle vintage 2010 shared with Chris at Ebenezer’s. Big thanks for this one. Pours out a dark mahogany topped with a tan head. Aroma was great with lots of fruit, caramel, and spice. Taste was much of the same sweetness, some wood, nutty, and plenty pit fruit.
