COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle. Pours deep brown with a big caramel head with orange highlights. The nose is of christmas pudding, rum, raisins, spices, cherries. The taste is balanced sweetness with a lovely malty base. Some mulled wine flavors, more christmas spices, some pepper and dark fruits. Nice caramel flavors on the finish. The body’s full, the beer’s sticky, oily. A bit boozy. The carbonation nice and subtle. Overall, a really accomplished beer.

Dark smooth brown bordering on black with ruby highlights. Thin head but constant throughout. Very slight medicinal taste with a just a tad of pleasant sugary sweetness and dryness and some soft leafy earthiness too. Sharp but gentle carbonation which softens in time. So much going on and obviously well put together. Power but restrained in its execution. Strong, beautiful and complete.

Bottle, 2013 vintage. Pours a coffee color with mocha foam head which dissipates quickly. Very robust and hearty aromas: plums, coffee, overripe cherries, barley wine, some hairspray. Almost smells artificial. On to the taste. Strong mocha flavour, some vanilla, low carbonation, chocolate, faint hint of bock. Booziness and cherries in development. Relatively neutral aftertaste. Ok.
