Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle 33 cc 2011 vintage. Pours a dark brown with a small light brown head that quickly dissapears. Aroma is chocolate and raisins upfront with other heavy sweet fruit in the background. Taste is umami, not a discription i have used before but it is indeed a pleasant savory taste. The texture helps it is a full body with almostno carbonation. There is a long finish on the sweet side. Not beer beer you could drink all night but the one bottle is great.

Bottle @ home 20140916. Pours almost black with a dense beige head. Aroma of toffee, licorice and plastic. Tastes plums, raisins, dates, vanilla, strawberry. Also phenolic spicy/peppery. The plastic doesn’t come through in the taste. Very well balanced. Full body, oily texture, light carbonation.

Vintage 2011. Porzadna etykieta nawiazujaca do stylistyki piwa. Niewielka piana ale za to swietnie pachnace piwo marmolada i powidlami, kolor ciemno brazowy z fioletowo bordowymi refleksami. Kremowa bezowea piana sredniotrwala. Smak smolisty lekkie nuty whisky i debowego posmaku, troche skarmelizowanego slodu. Lekko slodkie. Finisz rozgrzewajacy i wytrawny lekko drapiacy w gardlo. Wysoce jakosciowe rocznikowane piwo. Polecam

33 cl bottle @ home (2011 vintage). Pours brownish amber with a lot of sediment and an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are dried fruit, caramel, sugar, yeast, and alcohol - with an alcoholic finish.

Bottle, 2010 vintage. Very dark reddy mahogany brown, small ring of off-white head. Aroma is sweet with strawberry, alcohol, yeast character, port wine. Body is medium, rich, low carbonation and smooth. Taste is very mild and malty, definite raisin and date, alcohol, spicy finish. I’m surprised to see that it was aged in bourbon barrels, as this doesn’t come through much. Tastes good.
