COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2013 2010 Vintage bottle@‘t Antwaerps Bierhuiske: very dark brown with a beige head, taste & smell is creamy thick malts, lots of nuts, dark fruits, chocolate, tobacco, slight toffee & caramel, boozy aftertaste, thick & creamy malt-based body, a little rough around the edges but this pretty damn impressive //// tried again on draft, so soft & fruity, more like current Struise style, incredible stuff 4.5 -> 4.8

Poors dark brown red with good foamy head. Slightly cloudy. Great aroma of wood, barreled dark wine. Extremely balanced taste of oak, raisins, prunes. Nice equilibrity between sweet and a nice litle sour. Compared to Westvleteren xii this is the better of the two!!

Exquisita.

Beautiful aroma of sweet dry fruits and a hint of alcohol. Deep amber-brown in color with a small tan head. Extremely smooth drinking, with outstanding balance. Nice moderate sweetness with a great subtle hop balance. Not particularly spicey, just smooth off the barrel and good!

Vintage 2010. Bottle@home. Pours mahogany with a 2cm beige head. Aroma’s of dark fruit, plums, raisins, some vanilla, bourbon alcohol, caramel; abosolutely deliscious. Soft mouthfeel with just enough carbonation. Again dark fruits, figs, syrup, candy sugar, Long, dry and warming finish, Very balanced with hops and the background. Pwew! This will be unsurpassable when aged, save a bottle when you can. Thank you Struise for an absolutely glorious beer!!

27/06/2011 33cl bottle @ home - 2010 version (2011-284)

Dark brown beer, cloudy. Beige creamy but small head, pretty stable and a bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet caramel, nuts, dried fruits, some mocha, little smoke. MF: ok carbon, creamy texture and full body. Taste: sweet caramel, hint of mocha, sour fruits, cherries, berries, tobacco. Very nice.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2010 Thanks for the free bottle Peter. The pour is very dark brown- almost black. Tons of dark fruit in the nose- raisin, plum, and fig with some light grape notes and yeasty dough character. A light spice character comes in as she warms. A pleasant yeast character in the form of angelfood cake dough gives way to dark fruit in the form of raisin and plum. Molasses and dark sugar give way to some toffee and caramel notes. The palate is thick and creamy with a sugary finish.

Pours dark with a good head. The aroma is fruity, fresh, with caramel, herbs. the palate if nice, but a bit on the light side, just like a westvleteren 12. the flavor follows the aroma adding some malt, coffee, cane sugar. A very good beer on the trapist style.
