Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Zalige warme zachte likeurachtige afdronk. Puur vakmanschap dit bier !!

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2013 2010 Vintage bottle@‘t Antwaerps Bierhuiske: very dark brown with a beige head, taste & smell is creamy thick malts, lots of nuts, dark fruits, chocolate, tobacco, slight toffee & caramel, boozy aftertaste, thick & creamy malt-based body, a little rough around the edges but this pretty damn impressive //// tried again on draft, so soft & fruity, more like current Struise style, incredible stuff 4.5 -> 4.8

Poors dark brown red with good foamy head. Slightly cloudy. Great aroma of wood, barreled dark wine. Extremely balanced taste of oak, raisins, prunes. Nice equilibrity between sweet and a nice litle sour. Compared to Westvleteren xii this is the better of the two!!

2011 vintage bottle at home. Actually enjoyed as it past its bbd at the end of august. Pours a dark copper with lacing. Smells of dark fruits and raisins. Tastes sweet grape undertones. The alcohol content is well hidden and lush. It actually tastes more like a dessert wine than a beer bit is great for it.

Exquisita.

Foam: pale brown foamy head which doesn’t last too long. Colour: dark, ruby or mahogany. Aroma: blueberry, raisin, malts, sweet. Taste: Vintage 2013, lots of dark fruits, hints of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry, very smooth mouthfeel, dark sugar, pronounced cherry, sweet vinous notes, medium to low carbonation, plums, dates, hits of vanilla and oak notes. Complex, rich malty finish and very well balanced brew.

brown colour, moderate sized beige head;aroma of liqueur, herbs, slight vanilla, chocolate, dried fruits like plum, figs, maybe some raisin, anise, minimal whisky notes and toffee; taste of syrupy sweetness with dried fruits (figs and plum again), vanilla, hints of anise, smoked woody notes, nuts, herbal liqueur and some minimal roasted sugar; amazing ’beer’!

Beautiful aroma of sweet dry fruits and a hint of alcohol. Deep amber-brown in color with a small tan head. Extremely smooth drinking, with outstanding balance. Nice moderate sweetness with a great subtle hop balance. Not particularly spicey, just smooth off the barrel and good!
