Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

33cl, 2011 Vintage shared at Thanksgiving 2015. Ruby-shoesole brown pour, still well alive and even fizzy despite its age. Strong, rumtopfed fruit aroma of Schladerer Zwetschge, prune marmelade, cassonade and residual chocolate. Very dry and wood-matured mouthfeel, allowing prune essence more than sweetness to shine. Drinks pretty yeast-refined and consumate, at its estimated peak of 4 years - although I prefer some more mouthfeel from my Struise digestifs.

ninecats (345) - Uddevalla, SWEDEN - OCT 27, 2015
Bottle from 2013. Hazy deep reddish brown, big beige compact foam, dissipates fairly quick leaving some lacings. Aroma is fairly complex, coffee beans, roasted malt, semi sweet with vanilla and cookies, minor fruit/raspberries. Taste is evidently more sweet than the aroma suggested, but not less complex, with vanilla, plums, muscovado sugar, malt, some kind of herbish touch in between, finish is roasted with sugar and raspberries. Oily texture. Big body, low carbo. One word: Lovely!

visionthing (3884) - Oslo, NORWAY - OCT 27, 2015
33cl bottle from Struise shop, Brügge. Pours close to clear, dark brown with a somewhat modest beige head. Malty aroma with dried dark fruits, notes of oak and ripe, dark plums, caramel and hints of vanilla and alcohol. Sweet, flavourful, smooth and very well balanced. Not as complex as Pannepot, but yet another high alcohol and very well crafted beer from Struise. Just dangerously drinkable.

CraftBeerNick (1410) - London Town, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 25, 2015
Bottle at home, 25th October 15. Pours murky brown. Aroma is heady, liquor, brown sugar, dark fruits, caramel. Taste is caramelised prunes, brown burnt sugar, bourbon, slight oak not too much, but adds to the beer, so it’s not overly sweet. Great Quad

Lore (1654) - Budapest, HUNGARY - OCT 9, 2015
brown colour, moderate sized beige head;aroma of liqueur, herbs, slight vanilla, chocolate, dried fruits like plum, figs, maybe some raisin, anise, minimal whisky notes and toffee; taste of syrupy sweetness with dried fruits (figs and plum again), vanilla, hints of anise, smoked woody notes, nuts, herbal liqueur and some minimal roasted sugar; amazing ’beer’!

Tognetta (493) - Campinas, BRAZIL - OCT 7, 2015
Marrom vinho, espuma bege de baixa formação e média persistência. Aroma licoroso, adocicado, candy sugar, uva passa, cereja, alcoólica. Paladar de dulçor intenso, maltada, álcool presente mas bem distribuído. Corpo licoroso, baixíssima carbonatação. Aftertaste com bastante uva e açucar, alcoólico, persistente.
