COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle, from Dranken Geers. 33cl. Pours dark brown/black with a dark brown head. Dark malts obviously present in the foam, as well as in the nose. Sweet coffee, caramel, burnt nuts ... Aroma when sipping a bit liquorish, fusels. Then esters show up. Belgian yeast profile says hi. Mouthfeel very good, slick and warming, medium to low carbonation. Very good.

Flasche („Sint Amatus 12, Vintage 2013") vom Bierzwerg. - Tiefstes Kastanienbraun, knapper beigefarbener Schaum. - In der Nase reiches dunkles Malz und milde fruchtige Säure. - Antrunk reich dunkelmalzig mit runder Malzsüße, pikant fruchtiger Säure (Pflaume), dunkler Schokolade, Weinbrand und zarten Anklängen an Moos, alles zusammengehalten durch reiche aber runde obergärige Fruchtigkeit. Zart moosiger, wenig bitterer Abgang. Der enorme Alkoholgehalt ist kaum zu schmecken. - Schönes belgisches Starkbier, süffig und rund aber beinahe unauffällig. Von dieser Brauerei hatte ich irgendwie mehr erwartet …

Bottle bought at Geers Oostakker. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Taste is sirupy, caramel, dried fruits, tannine, wood, malts, hints of coffee and in the end a little bitterness.

MPA (913) - Amager (form. Nørrebro&Aalborg), DENMARK - APR 8, 2016
Bottle, vintage 2010 sampled April 8, 2016. Dark brown with a little sediment and a beige head. Aroma of wood, vanilla, raisins, plums and dates. Flavour is slightly sweet with vanilla notes and dark fruit, malty with wooden elements and ending in a licorice bitterness and alcohol warmth. Full bodied. Very nice beer indeed.

An enormous treat by the Struise Brewers. It is one of the finest Quadrupel’s I’ve tasted. It has the most wonderful texture and a whisky aroma. Love it.

Où, Quand, Comment : Bouteille 330ml, dégustée le 7/6/2013.
Visuel : Couleur : brune foncée. Apparence : voilée.
Arôme : Levures fruitées (fruits foncés, raisins) et épicées, caramel, pain, sucre brun, notes de chocolat et d’alcool.
Goût : Entrée de bouche : Goût prononcé de levures fruitées (prunes, pruneaux, raisins et autres fruits foncés) et épicées. Un ferme support malté de caramel aux notes rôties et de sucre brun est également présent avec un léger goût de pain ainsi que des notes de chocolat, d’alcool et boisé.
En bouche : Corps : moyen. Effervescence : moyenne. Texture : riche et légèrement crémeuse. Finale : moyenne-longue, composée d’une légère amertume d’alcool doux boisé et accompagné un léger résiduel sucré et de levures fruitées.

Bottle at Trollekelder, Gent, march 13th 2015. Dark brown body with a lasting beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, yeast esters and mocca, taste is sweet and spicy, fruits, banana, warming malt and plum finish. Excellent quad!

Bottle brought back from a trip to Amsterdam. Pours a slightly murky deep brown with a good cream head. The aroma is vinous with red fruits. The taste is vinous too with light spice, raison, clove, earthy yeast and warming alcohol. Excellent.

33 cl Bottle - 2011 Vintage I expected more of this, was kind of disappointed. Although my style, I found this beer rather mediocre, certainly not outstanding in any way.

Brassin 2011. Bouteille de 330 ml dégustée au Saint-Bock (Montréal, QC) au coût de 10,20$. Arôme: Odeur de petits fruits et de caramel. Apparence: La couleur est brune foncée avec une moyenne densité de bulle. Présence d’un mince col mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de caramel et de petits fruits avec une pointe de vanille et d’oxydation. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement huileuse. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Arrière goût légèrement fruité. (Rating #6805)
