bartlebier (463) - Baden-Württemberg, GERMANY - APR 7, 2013
33cl bottles - The fresh blue-and-yellow Swedish flag colours and the IPA-label make you expect a refreshing beer that Struise seems not interested in delivering and with their earthy yeast, added sugars and heavy malt base not even disposed to ever produce. Nevertheless, this is a tasty crossover once you forget about the treacherous IPA misnomer. It does contain a fair and qualitatively high amount of herbal and apparently traditional UK pale ale hops (East Kent Golding?), but these are set off against all the usual De Struise artillery: fermented through-and-through, with a hard-working yeast providing a medium-full, near-sticky mouthfeel, ripe fruits and complex aromas of citrus zest. If it has to be an IPA, then a UK style (cf. Samuel Smith) one full of subtle chtonic flavours, not tonic refresheners.

Amber coloured and hazy. Off-white head, medium duration. Aroma is faint hoppy, a bit sharp but ok. Flavor starts light sweet, faint caramel, then heavy bitter. Dry texture.

Botella de 330ml. Copa Stem amplia. Saboreada en mar´13. Color latón oscuro y anaranjado a contraluz. Espuma beige y corona beige, amplia y cremosa. 330ml bottle. Wide Stem glass. Enjoyed on mar´13. Deep brass in color, orange to the light. Beige foam, wide creamy crown. Copious lacing rings. Amazing ripe fruit, caramel & toasted malt aromas. Toasted slightly sweet malt upfront is shaked by increasing citric/floral bitterness. Medium & flavorful body. Soft carbonation. Oily to watery mouthfeel. Citric astringency. Sweet malt finish. Orange zest & ripe fruit on the aftertaste. Well balance between sweet malts & sharp hops.

Swaroga (792) - Brussels, BELGIUM - MAR 16, 2013
33cl bottle. Dark amber and hazy color, small but consistent head. Nose : nuts, caramel, toffee, tart, strong citrus zest aromas from mandarins and pineapple. Apple. Sip : medium thick and deliciously smooth liquid is a trade mark of this brewery. Low carbonation. Sweet tart with notes of dried plums, mandarins, orange zest. It gets delicately bitter with hop aromas of pineapple. Well balanced and wonderfully smooth this beer is easy to drink. It lasts and reveals complex malt flavors. Really delicious.

11.2oz (bottled on 03/GG) - pours brownish orange with tan head and temperamental lacing. Nose is basement aromas and similar to a pilsner. Flavor adds toffee, brown sugar and a general maltiness. Alcohol bite. I can’t believe this is an IPA and I mean that in a positive way. I would have loved IPA’s (hoppy beers in general) way sooner if I had tried this before Sam Adams made its way into my life. Not very hoppy but moderately sweet. Nutty aftertaste. I wish this came in a larger bottle. Very good.

Another quality struise beer. Have kept this one quite a while, and was not entiirely convinced by its taste. Was hoping for a more hoppy IPA taste, but this was still quite good.. cereal, floral, herbs, earthy aroma’s a nice medium bitter taste. Drinks away easely
