Poured from bottle to glass. Amber hue with fizzy white head. Aroma is caramel, yeast, peppercorn, esters, melon. Mouthfeel is nice with lighter body and high carbonation. Sweet initially with bitter finish and CO2 sharpness. Overall, this is a so so brew with a slight metallic essence in the finish. Seems a bit miscategorized for an IPA.

Really fruity IPA. Bottle pour. 12 oz from lakeview liquor. Dark orange with hardly any head. Smells like a saison. Belgium all over this one. Not bad. Not very IPA in my opinion

jamestulloch (1223) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - DEC 13, 2013
Bottle from Appellation Wines. Murky amber body with a faint beige head that slowly fades to nothing. Lively carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of brown sugar, lightly roasted malt, yeast and a hint of strawberry. Sweet, malty flavour with subtle hop notes of earth and cooking apple. Medium body with a sticky mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. To me, this tastes more like a Dubbel than an IPA.

Bottle from the cellar, provenance lost in the mists of time (Kris Wines?) Quite a deep amber brown colour, thick white head. Malty for an IPA, good structure with all those random grains, the rye I think definitely stands out., slightly sweet funky flavour nice. Hops also there, earthy bitterness, less of the citrus. Not an IPA for your average American hophead, that’s for sure, but a very tasty beer.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Almost brown colour, light-beige head. Aroma of yeast, some malts, rye, hint of plastic, light fruity, almost like a dry Abbey Dubbel, tiny hint of hops. Flavour is rye bitterness, dry, malty, hint of cocoa, light fruity, toast, roasted malts, bitterness underneath, bitter finish, but not necessarily hoppy. Light to medium-bodied. Not worthy of the name IPA in my book, maybe as an old-style IPA, but this is a seriously underwhelming beer. Doesn’t make it bad though.

Pours a lighter ruby/brown, with a thick, fine, off white head. Aroma is mild citrus grapefruit, belgian malt, a bit cheesy, slight antiseptic. Taste is sweet leading to bitter, strong hint of vanilla, good body. Somewhat dry finish. Not bad. I must say that the label is nice. De Struise labels often are.

330ml bottle @ home. Ordered from Saveur Biere. Struise is one of my favourite brewerys but this wasn’t excellent performance.

33cl Bottle: Lot 15 from 12/2011, best before 31/5/2014. Poured into a Forbidden Fruit chalice on 18/10/2013 during a random beer tasting with myself. No idea where I got it from, most likely De Bierboom in Brugge? The beer sat there quiet content, I opened the bottle and still all is calm: tilt to pour and the brew rushes out like a gushing volcano, huge cream coloured head and half a chalice of beer! So the first (half) pour gives the big head and a clear amber body, the second brings the sediment, extra smells and oomph. Intense spicy hop aroma, even from the first pour, yeast esters and a malty undertone come as the beer warms a little. The taste is hop led, but a semi-sweet maltiness arrives mid-sip: I think the brewers like to play with the beers names and brew whatever they wish before choosing a style/name to hide it under. I enjoyed it, like all the Struise beers I’ve had so far (I think).

Bottle from Proof bottle shop. Amber brown pour with a thin beige head. Aroma is on the malty side - grain and spice. Tastes are a little yeasty, floral, bready, toffee, dried fruit, spices, orange peel. Lightly dry and bitter in the finish. Strange sharp palate. Tough one to rate - definitely different than most american ipa’s. Interesting to try once.
