COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Noordhoek Ostrich Farm and Resort has been offering visitors an oasis of silence, tranquility and green pasture since 1997. In 2001 we began offering our guests fresh, homemade ale, "Struise Witte" was born. The dutch word for "ostriches" is "struisvogels" or "Struise", but the same word can also mean "sturdy" or "robust". This "Robust White" is a living wheat beer of high fermentation, unfiltered and unpasteurized. Brewed with natural ingredients, bottle conditioned in 33 cl bottles.

Tashi’s house, 28/05/08. Bottle courtesy of Mes and Reakt. Hazy yellow with a persistent line of head. Aroma of wheat, honey, oats and oranges. Flavour is similar and I enjoyed the lack of overly harsh citrus notes.

The beer was hazy gold, with a lot of quickly dissipating white foam. In the aroma there was wheat, coriander, sweet banana, and alcohol. The flavor was tart citrus wheat with a faint amount of barnyard. Almost a lemonade finish. This would be great on a hot day!

Bottle at tasting at Chris Fischer’s (from Liars Club) house. Pours with a gold body topped by a medium thick head wtih a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sour with a hint of apple and other fruits. Light bodied and dry.

[bottle] Poured a slightly hazy straw gold with a huge, lasting off white head. Aroma is surpisingly tart, lots of citrus, delicous yeastiness, and lemon grass. Flavor is strikingly tart. Nice citrus characteristics, great yeast flavors, and plenty of wheat. Finishes with a lasting tartness. Edit: Based on previous postings, this bottle may also have been infected, but it sort of reminded me of the JP Calabaza Blanca, I might have to come back to this one later.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2008 Very fruity with a golden color and decent foam which disappears rather quickly. Acidity is well controlled despite its rather strong citrus aromas.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2008 Pours a hazy orange with a nice sized head. Aroma is wheat and a light fruitiness. Nice sweetness and a beautiful creamy mouthfeel. Re-rate - Finally found Struise here in the Cities. Hallelujah. Tried a bottle I hauled back from England (thanks Mes) and a bottle I bought here. First rating was from a bottle in Brugge. Maybe that one was fresh? Today it was more tart, thinner palate. Not quite as good as before.

Thanks hophead75. Not sure if this bottle was infected or what. Pours a sickly looking murky yellow orange. The head is quick to form and disappear. Smells sour and acidic, which makes me think it may be infected, a little citrusy, a little rotten. The flavor is similar, biting acidity which I would not expect from this style. Old malts and a little citrus. I’ll need to revisit this one.

The color was pale peach and hazy. The head was very thin, fizzy, and disappeared quickly. The aroma was tart and musty. There might be something wrong with this bottle, because the aroma seemed off. The flavor bad. It was very tart with a rotten flavor. The palate was lively. The finish was abrupt. I couldn’t finish it; this is why I think there might have been an infection.
