The Noordhoek Ostrich Farm and Resort has been offering visitors an oasis of silence, tranquility and green pasture since 1997. In 2001 we began offering our guests fresh, homemade ale, "Struise Witte" was born. The dutch word for "ostriches" is "struisvogels" or "Struise", but the same word can also mean "sturdy" or "robust". This "Robust White" is a living wheat beer of high fermentation, unfiltered and unpasteurized. Brewed with natural ingredients, bottle conditioned in 33 cl bottles.

It pours a cloudy golden colour, with a white head that disappears relatively quickly. Smells a bit sour (oranges?). Taste is a combination between malt ans sour notes, whereby the sour holds the middle between orange zest and lemon. Overall, nothing exceptional.

Bottle from Sterk Avonderkoop, Amsterdam. Slow gusher. Muddy, pale grey-golden body and a small dense white head. Yeasty bread dough dominate the nose the first minute or so, then coriander and malts comes through. Acidic, lactic, maybe even Brett-ish flavors with yeasty notes on the tongue. Light to medium bodied. Doughy texture and a gentle astringency.

Surprisingly sour witbeer (or heavily infected). Thinking about the explicit bad choice of mixing two styles like sour and witbeer, it’s probably infected. (Or a good mix of styles which don’t belong together, even though I like both)

Blonde très légèrement trouble, effervescence faible à bulles toutes fines, col blanc fin. Céréales bien présentes, léger citronné, petite amertume, assez bien de corps. Une blanche un peu autre...

One of the three very first beers from this renowned brewery (along with Struise Rosse and Kloeke Blonde). From a 50 cl bottle, tasted at De Hopduvel café in Ghent when it was still open, I guess some ten years ago, this was my first encounter with the Struise Brouwers. Very thick, rocky, creamy, irregular, stable head; hazy golden blonde colour. Malty and wheaty aroma with green apple, citrus peel, iron and subtle coriander; malt sweet taste, soft and smooth mouthfeel, dried citrus and light coriander, very refreshing, yeasty, with low hop bitterness in the finish. In all a typical Belgian witbier, but artisanal and very well crafted, a very early (and still weak) echo of the works of art this brewery would later produce.

330ml bottle pored in a thumbler glass. A: Pours a cloudy golden yellow color forming a medium to small thin bubbled white head. Low retention and practically no lacings left S: Spicy and peppery. Notes of black pepper, orange zest and coriander. A bit grassy. Different from the traditional Belgian Witbiers. More sweet and malty in the nose T: Slightly sweet upfront. Sweet malts. A bit sour. Herby and spicy. Notes of orange zest, coriander, wheat, and bready yeasts M: Medium body. Low carbonation and a spicy and citrus aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Again, not a traditional Belgian Witbier but still a Struise [ BA Review @ 8/10/2013 ]
