Bottle from Willems. Deep brown-red pour with rich foamy tan colored head. Aroma of potent winey notes, rich oak, wine tannins, vanilla, earthy aromas. Taste is sour but really not overpowering, nice toasted malt, winey flavors, mineral notes abound, very light booze. Palate is med bodied with prickly dry carbonation. Very nice.

500 mL bottle courtesy of Chris, served in a snifter. Pours deep chestnut with a small tan head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a trace of lace. The nose has notes of flowers, sour fruit, green apples, earth, grass and funk. The flavour is moderately sweet with a slight tartness. Molasses, oak, dark fruit, roasted malts, vanilla, tobacco and red wine notes come through as well. The finish is long and woody, with red wine and tart fruity notes. On the palate it is medium in body with a smooth, syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, an excellent sour red ale. Beautifully complex, an elegant brew. 2014-07-19

Aroma is dense and sour. Color is dark cherry wood. Taste is colorful and the aftertaste has a hint of coffee.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2014 Bouteille. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

50cl bottle poured in a Struise glass. 2009 Vintage. Now this was a gusher. (Pours) a dark reddish brown colour with a mahogan head which remains for quite a while. Aroma is typical oud bruin but nicely exaggerated in true Struise style. Drawing a comparison with Duchesse de Bourgogne (which in my opinion is the King/Queen of the style) I would say it is not quite as refined. Mouthfeel has more body and the upfront tartness is more extreme. However, I would say they should be served at different occasions - Ypres is much more a beer to be savoured by itself whereas Duchesse has the refreshing, classic lines to stand up to being served with food; this on the other hand is more of a meal by itself. All in all I could not say I prefer one over the other and both will continue to be a staple in my regular cycle of Belgians (however, at the price Duchesse will be a more frequent addition). Another Struise classic.

On tap at Church Key. Pours a dark translucent brown with one finger of foam that quickly faded to a small amount of bubbles that hugged the glass. Aroma is tart, slightly funky, with yeast notes. Flavor is classic oud bruin, that seems to have been somehow simplified. The expected complexities have been flattened out by the barrel aging.
