3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the Sybarite Pig in Boca Raton. Snifter. Deep reddish brown pour with a serious white fluffy head. Aroma of cherries, wine cask, tart fruits, and spice. The taste was more mild than I expected with semi-tart cherries, slight sweetness, a light malt and hop base, and some spice. Very light body, small carbonation. Finish is tart cherries as well. Good beer but it could be better. Wish it was more tart.

Bouteille.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
50cl bottle poured in a Struise glass. 2009 Vintage. Now this was a gusher. (Pours) a dark reddish brown colour with a mahogan head which remains for quite a while. Aroma is typical oud bruin but nicely exaggerated in true Struise style. Drawing a comparison with Duchesse de Bourgogne (which in my opinion is the King/Queen of the style) I would say it is not quite as refined. Mouthfeel has more body and the upfront tartness is more extreme. However, I would say they should be served at different occasions - Ypres is much more a beer to be savoured by itself whereas Duchesse has the refreshing, classic lines to stand up to being served with food; this on the other hand is more of a meal by itself. All in all I could not say I prefer one over the other and both will continue to be a staple in my regular cycle of Belgians (however, at the price Duchesse will be a more frequent addition). Another Struise classic.

On tap at Church Key. Pours a dark translucent brown with one finger of foam that quickly faded to a small amount of bubbles that hugged the glass. Aroma is tart, slightly funky, with yeast notes. Flavor is classic oud bruin, that seems to have been somehow simplified. The expected complexities have been flattened out by the barrel aging.

500ml bottle. very lively upon opening so be careful with it! pours a rich reddish brown with a huge head on the first pour due to being so lively. aroma is very yeasty and malty. good taste. nice and tart, medium mouth feel, dry finish. very yeasty and a little smoky - assuming thats from the barrels.
