Old_Mr_Crow (976), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 30, 2008 Bottle courtesy of pantanap -- thanks!
Pours a hazy orange-tinged gold with a pretty modest white head given the vigor of the pour. Delightful aroma. Sour, sour cherries and wood, a bit of dry aged sheep cheese. But the flavor doesn’t really match up. Soft sourness, tart but not overly so, lactic like Berliner weisse rather than brett-dominated. The pediococcus is doing most of the work here, it seems. Bready, a bit buttery (chardonnay), not a huge degree of complexity in the flavor, almost bland as one previous rater noted.
Perfectly drinkable but not the extraordinary standout that every other Struise creation has been. Still, props to them for the experiment!
Gregis (853), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Jul 21, 2008 Bottle courtesy of kmweaver. Pours a hazy, golden amber with a thin ring of white bubbles clinging to the edges of the glass, leaving behind patchy/sheeting lace. The nose is an enticing fruity, yeasty blend with notes of apple, pear, mildly sour white grapes, sweet berries and a light Brettiness. Light to medium-bodied and sour with a tart, dry finish. I had actually forgotten that this was a sour ale until it hit my tongue, but it certainly brings the goods. Sour cherries, wild strawberries, and bretty sourness finishing with a slightly woody and tart dryness at the finish. This is a very drinkable sour and one I will look for whenever I travel. Thanks again for the bottle, Ken! kramer17801 (1846), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 21, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy dark straw yellow with a small fizzy white head that fell to a thin ring quickly. Nice tart and sour nose with some light lemon. Seems to be more dominated by the pedio than the brett. Tart and slightly acidic flavor that has a nice bite too it without being too overpowering. Almost reminds me of a Berliner Weisse or a Gueuze. Notes of Grannie Smith apple, lemon juice, and crisp wheat. Dries out nicely on the finish leaving a mouthwatering slightly acidic lingering finish. Mouthfeel is light and crisp with a perfect fizzy carbonation level. A very nice refreshing summer drinker. zeke626 (188), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 20, 2008 Thanks to akevitt for sharing. Bottle, pours a hazy, yellow-orange body with a short lasting, foamy yellowish-white head. Aroma of sour cherry and sour apple with a hint of yeast. Flavor is more sour apple and lemon with some wheat tones. Medium bodied with slight fizz on the front of the palate. Tart finish with a slight sour acid taste. Light tang on the aftertaste. tomthompson89 (1051), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 18, 2008 One of my favorite sour ales ever. very drinkable and refreshing. big head lotsa little bubles color was golden yellow that was kinda murky, nose is musty, baryard some citrus. flavor is yes u guessed it sour but refreshing as well, some malt character. really really good may have to buy a few of these. joshwilfong (482), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 18, 2008 rich golden appearance with minimal carbonation. sweet and sour nose. thick moutfeel. flavor of sour acidic bacteria driven funk, strongly reminiscent of a gueze. the only failing is the lack of the tart finish, which in this case is just a little dry. a great brewing idea though, from one of the best in the world
