3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 1997. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear dark ruby in colour with a thin white head. Slight whiff of chocolate powder in the sweet malty aroma. Creamy texture to the mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a moist maltloaf base with molasses, dates and syrupy raisins. There is a slight dusty hop presence in the short aftertaste but this fades fast. Finish is malty with warming rich vinous notes of sweet sherry and treacle toffee. An excellent English Srong Ale and highly recommended.

2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 6/20
[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Dirty brown pour with a bubbly white head that reduces pretty quickly to almost nothing. Bitter malt aromas, almost cheesy nose. Rich deep flavours of stone fruit backed up by a tobacco bitterness. Alcohol in evidence on the finish, which is quite harsh and bitter. Not great balance to this one – maybe a bad bottle looking at the other ratings

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown with a few bubbles. Dark chocolate aroma, rather like a porter. A delicious sweet-sour fruit and chocolate malt taste with a full body and warm, dry alcoholic finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
What a great ale! Chocolatey coffee nose and initial flavour. Pours dark ruby with little or no head. Taste is stunning - rich but fresh at the same time, with a balance of dark notes and sweet berry fruit all finishing with a lightly bitter caramel malt. One of the nicest english ales I’ve had in a long time.

Bottle. Very dark brown with a dense cream head. Aromas are roast malts with chocolate and lots of berry fruit. Flavours are sweet coffee malts followed by strong alcohol notes. Also has winter fruit with mollases. Smooth on the palate with a dry, warming alcohol finish.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Very dark brown with a touch of ruby and a thick beige head. Excellent lacing. Aroma is sweet, chocolatey and malty with some brown sugar and dark fruit.
I have to say, that tastes superb; sweet, roasted, caramel, brown sugar and dark fruits again with some nice hops in the finish, great smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Outstanding.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, the Cockney pub. Labelled SUDDABY’s Auld Bob. Dark red-brown with a thick pillowy beige beige head. Nice lace. Dark malts in the background and plenty of hops (resinous, grapefuity). Long, highly bitter finish. Medium to full body. More "arrogant bastard" than old ale. Very good!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A deep red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet chocolately, but also with notes of vanilla. The flavor is sweet and very roasty, almost burnt, and with a very dry end. Nice.
