COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned. Brewed for English Heritage.
NOTE: Following the closure of Malton brewery in 2004, all Suddabys branded beers have been contract brewed at Hambleton, Brown Cow or Cropton. However it not always clear which beers are currently brewed where.
Brother Anthony’s Rievaulx Ale is an ale brewed with the finest English malts, hops, borage honey and yeast with a subtle hint of herbs. Brewed especially for English Heritage at Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire. Ale was a staple part of the Brother’s diet, being originally to quench the thirst of the Lay Brothers during their hard working day.

[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Dull coppery golden colour with a thin lacing. Sweet aroma something like cream soda. Contains lavender and lemon balm – they are both faintly evident in the sweet floral notes on the palate, but there’s a reasonable malt component in there as well. Love what they tried to do here, but for me it doesn’t quite work – too much unbalanced sweet floral tackiness for me [30102008]

Bottle shared with Blankboy and Hogtown Harry, Blankboy’s bottle from his UK trip. Medium yellow, small white head. Smells like stuffy department store clothing - in other words - musty, dust, plastic, some honey - weird. Taste - mineral, floral, some earthy hops, light malt. Interesting earthy taste. Weird but good and damn refreshing.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2007 Bottle (500ml). Generously shared by blankboy, fresh back from the UK. Poured pale amber with a small frothy off-white head. Very odd aroma - light dried wildflowers, canola grain and something that seemed a bit like plastic - not awful, but strange. The taste was very nice - dry and floral, almost pungently so, definitely fragrant wildflowers, with light bitterness in the finish. The body was appropriately light, mildly astringent, crisp and quick finishing , with a bit of a pungent pollen aftertaste. Unusual, refreshing, pretty decent. Thanks, monkey-man!

My bottle shared with HogTownHarry and tupalev. Wow, I can’t believe I was the first to enter this beer and rate it! Pours a clear gold with an average size diminishing white head. Aroma’s sweet and fruity along with herbs and honey. Refreshing flavour of malt, honey, herbs and hops and with a light bitter spicy finish. Medium bodied. Unique and enjoyable, I’d love to drink it again.
