Bottle. Caramel in the aroma. Malty to the taste with some spice and caramel. Very tasty but not too striking. Bit hoppy at the end.

On tap @ Sudwerk Dock Store. Clear amber colored beer with a finger of white foam. Bread, toast, and biscuit malt aromas. There’s a light spice and leafy, floral hop quality to it, too. Maybe a touch earthy in terms of the flavor. Light bitterness, some sweet malt, and a touch of orange peel. Maybe a very subtle acidity. Decent enough.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Not much in the aroma other than what seems like raw pumpkin. Slightly murky orange amber color with a small bubbly white head. Flavor is toasted wood and some more very slightly vegetal gourd. There’s a light sugary sweetness that seems separated from the rest of the flavor that finally resolves into more of a caramel sweetness. Hops are evident but also seem strangely disconnected from the rest of the flavor. Finishes a bit watery with lasting bitterness and some sweetness. There’s very little here that reminds me of a Marzen. My label looks different from the photo here, so it makes me wonder if this is a different/new version. Although this seems to be a somewhat disjointed beer, it’s not bad overall. I’d like to try this fresh from the brewery to see if this one’s just off since Sudwerk is a find brewery.

On tap at Evernote. Malts up front with a nutty finish... there’s something in the mid-palate that’s bitter / herbal that I didn’t care for, otherwise pretty good especially the finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: FEB 12, 2015 12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods. Nose of yeast with some toast. Taste of light caramel, molasses and bread. Very smooth and a bit sweet. No floral or citrus hops here. Slight bitterness is dominated by a rich, smooth malt. Soft carbonation. Easy to drink and very satisfying. One was definitely not enough...

"of course since this one is (before I rate it) the lowest scoring SW beer...i liked it best. but i was not alone...the 4 of us that were there all thought this beer, along with the XP were tops, with the pale ale and hefe bringing up the rear. fits the style to a tee...not incredibly exciting, but good on a cool day. nice, crisp malt character. well balanced."

Amber pour with thin white head, peanut brittle and dates with full smooth flavor, hops noted with moderately bitter finish, nice at 50 degrees in a typically pub glass
