4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From 330 ml bottle. Pours a solid black with a creamy tan head and just a thin brick red highlight at the edge. Moderate carbonation. Aroma is rich black coffee, smoke, walnuts, dried fruit and cocoa nibs. Taste is big roasted coffee up front with tobacco and leather notes coming in along with a touch of smoke. Dried fruit, dark chocolate, spice and more (lighter) coffee at the end. Big, bold flavours but well balanced. Liked this a lot.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. Black with a smooth off-white head. It has a light smoked character with a fine nose in this respect with some coffee evident, and edging towards a more burnt taste. Medium bodied.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
At Euston Tap. Black, small white bubbly head. Aroma - ash, coffee. Body is light, quite smooth, carbonation low. Taste - sweet coffee and smoke but toned down, watery even. It has a nice balance and drinkability to it. One for sociable quaffing rather than savouring.

Euston Tap. Cask. Not sure how I have missed this one! Opaque black - brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and slightly dry with mild fine carbonation. Smooth and mild dark malts. Powdery dark chocolate. Earthy coffee. Smooth dry finish. Earthy coffee aftertaste. Not bad, bit dry.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Vino Wines. Black body with a thick tan head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of espresso, ash and burnt toast. Bitter, burnt flavour with a dry finish (DruncanVeasey’s ’bunsened pencil’ comment is spot on). Thin body with a watery texture. Soft fizz. This Stout won’t appeal to everyone, but I really like its burnt bitterness. It’s just a pity the mouthfeel is so light. I think this would be excellent in cask.

Tap (Laiuva Lahna, Helsinki)
Lovely stale coffee aroma. Horrible stale coffee taste. Watery palate. Could have ticked this from the free sample, but not prepared to be such a cheapskate. But this is watery, and the coffee’s stale, and that just doesn’t do it for me in the taste, despite my predisposition from the aroma. Nope. very much not doing it for me.

1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
Cask @ London Drinker Beer Festival 2014, Kings Cross. Wow definitely not a beer for me. Smells like coffee dregs and tastes like a cold cup of coffee that’s been left on the windowsill outside for a couple of nights. Summer Wine have been pretty faultless up til now, and the Mokko milk stout was excellent but i’m sorry, this was a definite sink pour.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
as the name suggests, this is a stout for coffee lovers. dry, with a great medium-roasted coffee hint and a sour aftertaste. thank god it’s not sweet. body is rather thin, but the ABV speaks for itself; this however makes this beer more drinkable.
coffee, roasty, earthy, black, minimal head, light-brown foam, lightly bitter, lightly sour, light body, thin feel,
