3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Keg Half Pint at Euston Tap, London in Sept 2012 - Pitch Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, rye, espresso coffee, chocolate, some liquorice. Fruity; tropical fruity and grapefruit citrus. Yeasty. Hoppy; piney resinous hops. Very smooth. Good malt/fruit/hop balance. Sweet roast malts meet bitter fruity hops. Nice Black IPA!

At just on cool and into a snifter. Black and opaque but loose in the glass. Rolls around with little effort and no legs. A soppy mess of tannish foam atop is mostly lasting but maintains a solid lace. A slap and then a punch in the face is the aroma. Pungent, pot pourri and rose water, treacle and red wood, pine needles and stinging nettles, cumquat and dried papaya with a sticky link of eucalypt sap. Ver’ nice. Ooohh, and then onto the palate it goes. Yeah, nah, I don’t know, maybe..., not! Acrid, bitter and biting with a strong camphorous note reminiscent of breathing in insect spray. This dominates but the burnt, bitter malts and charred wood notes don’t come to any balancing agreement either. It is light in body with a soft, frothy mouthfeel and gammy, perplexing finish. Oh so long. It is like eating that burnt biscuit you know you shouldn’t and then having it repeat on you all afternoon. There is no harmony here; no nuance of fruit, or supple sweetness, or toasted malt, or body, or well anything. Couldn’t do it. A re-rate of a fresh batch maybe, but this...., no!!

Bottle 330ml @Beer Hunters
Opaque black color, tiny beigeish head. Licorice and petrol in the nose. Light to medium bodied. Licorice caramel, burned malts, fusels and some rye. A bit flattish palate. Combination of flavors don’t work.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled. Black beer, huge beige head. Complex nose has loads of earthy yeast, barnyard, complementary, fresh juicy and resiny hops and a mixture of exotic dryfruits. Slightly liquoricy roast-malts in the background. Some plummy notes appear when it is warm enough. Dry, bitter flavor. Round, slightly bready maltiness (from munich malts?). Roastedness is quite light. Sour yeasty finish has distinctive flavor of bretta. And some lingering, slightly resiny bitterness. Medium body, slightly oily and highly carbonated texture. I don’t know if the sourness was intentional in this one, but for me it really works. Magnificent beer, very complex.
