3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks graciously to Toby at The Kernel. Black beer with a HUGE tan head. Really no need for that level of carbonation. Strong Caol Ila whisky smoked peaty aroma. Now much against common opinion that doesnít mean that I will take an instant disliking to this beer just cos itís barrel aged and in an Islay whisky cask. Although the aroma is strongly individualistic it isnít completely overpowering nor unbalanced. I think itís pretty damn good and thatís cos the base beer is big and well constructed enough to carry the barrel ageing. Muscular dark malts underpin this beer. Goes well with chicken tikka and ciabatta bread. Classy beer with big intense aromas and flavours. . Impressive.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany with a bubbly tan head. The aroma is big medicinal hop, roasted malt. The flavour is strong bitter with a huge alcohol bitter palate. The alcohol really dominates this beer for sure. I liked it, but barrel aged beers normally deliver so much more. Barrel aged beers need to compliment a beer, not dominate it, which is what happens here.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared thanks to jmgreenuk. Pours near black with a thick beige head. Aroma of Caol Ila, massive and overpowering anything else. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter. Behind the Caol Ila in the palate there is roast, dark chocolate and caramel. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Simply too overpowered by the scotch.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle
Thanks to BoBoChamp for sharing some of this rather interesting imperial stout. It was not my favorite but how often do you get to try something aged in a 27 year old whiskey barrel? Iíll have to see if I can track down some other Summer Wine on cask as a comparison to see what their more standard beers are like.
Aroma / Appearance - The brownish black base is slick with sheer legs that are a bit light for a big beer. Scotch, vanilla, black coffee, and anise tickle the senses. The smoky undertones add some depth yet it lacks the punch of a big complex imperial stout.
Flavor / Palate - Coffee, ash, and anise sweep across the palate. Like melting ice water they leave a mark but not one that is super memorable. The oaky finish gives away the barrel aging the most though I am sure some scotch aspects are hidden in there somewhere. If this is a one off grab a bottle and share it with a few friends.
