Dark Brown black with fluffy grey-beige head. Quite sour coffee bitterness with underlying honey, seaweed and soap. Prickly carbonation, full mouthfeel, coffee, cola, big alcohol hit, booze on the swallow, fairly bitter coffee finish.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012, London. Pours thick black with a modest, off-white head. Tons of scorched earth in the nose. Big sweet flavor with further scorched earth character, dirt, dark baking cocoa. Full bodied with fine carbonation and an oily mouthfeel. Big baking cocoa finish, with the bitterness that comes along with it. Nice beer. Really nice beer.

Bottle 330ml. @ chriso s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2012.

Clear dark black brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, light beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, dusty, sweet dark malt, wood, butter notes. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate, dark malt roasted, wood, light vanilla, buzzy alcohol. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Bottle @ Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig. Pours deep brown with a medium tan head. The nose is burning chocolate, sweet brioche bread, a big shock of vanilla. The taste is light chocolate, plenty of vanilla. Some boozy wood and light peat. Full bodied, soft. Better than the keg edition I sampled earlier this year. Overall, very good. Not quite at the level of the Caol Ila version.

Bottled@chriso pre-gbbf shindig 2012. Pitch black colour, small off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts, mild toffee, vanilla, some slight ripe fruits and liquorice. Flavour is being rather similar, but also has some slight ashes and mild wooden notes.

Bottle with Ben. Black with a solid tan head that sticks around. Aroma of cold coffee. Flavour has coffee and chocolate. A light bitterness to finish. Not as good as the other one but still pretty good.

Bottle at home, side-by-side with the Caol Ila. Jet black viscous pour, thick tan head fades to a thin cap. Light smoke, varnish, liquorice, heavily roasted black coffee, touch of dark chocolate on the nose. Savoury but not overly smoky. Lovely rich creamy mouthfeel (on both), light dark chocolate, just the barest hint of vanilla, but becomes more later on, some liquorice. Soft woodsmoke throughout, quite oaky with a hint of booze. More booze than the Caol Ila, but it’s not unpleasant. Medium length roasted soft whisky malt finish. Nice. More dense, more savoury than the Caol Ila but possibly less drinkable. Both great though.

Bottle, black, thin tan head. Dusty, butterscotchy nose, lots of big malty notes and vanilla. Flavours of big black coffee and ashy, varnish-like elements almost (but in a good way somehow!). Almost fruity-chocolate flavours. Lovely viscous mouthfeel. Overall - terrific.

In bottle. A black beer with a fair tan head. Aroma of cacao nibs, burnt oak, honey and alcohol. Similar flavours and very bitter with mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Alcohol is fairly prominent. I prefer this to the regular version.
