COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Early German monks created “bock” beer as a hearty beverage that would help sustain them during their Lenten fasts. The first bock beers were dark, but soon came “blonder” styles such as maibock. Maibocks have a rich, malty, full flavor. And, since our first brewhouse was from Heimertingen in Bavaria, we’ve honored that heritage by giving the name to our first lager beer.“Bock,” by the way, is German for “male goat.” It doesn’t make sense to us either.

I eagerly await the arrival of this seasonal every year. As good as any German Maibock. A far better effort than Summit’s other lager. Robust malty aroma and flavor, topped by a fine snowwhite head.

The first time I tried Summit Maibock was at the Summit Brewery in St. Paul, MN after taking the tour. Apparently I had the last bottle they had on hand at the brewery at the end of the season and I loved it. Great balance between malt and hops. I will miss living in Minnesota greatly in April-May-June for the weather and this beer! A major reason my overall rating is so high is that this brew was only costing me $5 a 6pack and effectively halted my import drinking for a two month period.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Pilsner glass. Appearance: Clear, bright gold with thin but foamy head and some nice lacing lines. Aroma: Peppery and spicy aroma with bread dough, grass, and sweet apple and citrus. Aroma fades after a few minutes, mostly leaving a dry grassy smell behind. Taste: Strong combination of semi-sweet fruit (apple, pear, citrus) and spicy, peppery and floral hops. Nice layer of bread and grass throughout as well. Palate: Moderate carbonation, relatively full-bodied for a lager. Smooth, clean and dry (despite the somewhat sweet taste). Overall: My favorite Maibock. This beer deserves greater recognition; of course, too many people simply do not understand the style.

A fine, refreshing, subtle, well-balanced brew. Do I detect floral notes? 6/7/2002 update: I had this on tap for the first time at Chicago’s Map Room. Still very good.

Just sampled this years batch from a keg. I think this beer keeps improving. 3 years ago it had a flat charamel flavor and not a lot of that crip clean character that says ’Lager’. This years is great. Still a touch sweet for my tastes but a nice full malty flavor, mild but noticable spicy hop aroma and restrained bitterness. Very pleasing for a cool MN spring.

Wawood and I will never forget the dirty waitress who served us this in downtown Hopkins one drunken night. We kept asking her for more of her box. Anyway, there isn't a better name than "My box" for a beer. GRAVY! I rated this one at St. Paul Winterfest on 2/8/03. I dug her malt and gave good head.
