We’re proud to announce the new Summit Sága IPA, a decidedly different hop-forward brew due out in early May 2012. The beer has pronounced hop flavors and aromas of kiwi, passionfruit, apricot and gooseberry. Clean, assertive bitterness with balancing Pale malt characteristics. We hop it with the rare New Zealand Rakau hop along with Citra, Centennial and Amarillo. Named after the Norse Goddess of Poetry, who was the God Odin’s drinking companion... also, it was quite a saga to pick a name!

Bottle from Trinity Spirits. Pours a clear copper orange color with a medium off-white head. Some risidual sudsy lacing along the side of the glass. Nice hoppy aroma with a definite fruit note present. Can’t honestly say I can detect the kiwi and apricot from the description, but it’s a nice medley nonetheless. Flavor is heavy towards the hoppy side but there is some trailing malt notes that help balance it out. Dry mouthfeel. Overall a tasty offering from Summit.

The saga continues (wu tang?). Clear golden pour with a white head. Very clear golden. I got excited. Citrus fruit aroma, some graham cracker. Flavor isn’t nearly as hope forward as I like it, but the malt profile doesn’t get in the way. Mildly bitter finish, good carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear bright orange color with a minimal head that recedes quickly. Pale malt, slightly sweet, sits in the background. Hops are prominent but mild. Lots of fruitiness going on, kiwi, apricot, ripe fruits. Finishes with a sort of lingering biscuit cereal flavor. Pretty easy on the palate and smooth going down, almost like a session IPA. Not bad.

A decent IPA from Summit, but rough around the edges. The hops give a solid green herbal flavor with some grapefruit thrown in to boot, yet the beer has a harshness that makes the finish mildly abrasive. Prickly carbonation doesn’t help. Still, there’s a bready, citric center that makes Saga drinkable, and the herbal, bitter fade assuages the spiky texture.

12 oz bottle at home. Clear, amber/orange color, about a finger and a half of white head that dissipates in volume quickly, decent lacing. Aroma is citrus hops, lots of grapefruit, some bready malts. The flavor and palate are the highlights here, for Summit anyway. This beer is robustly hoppy but surprisingly well balanced by a sturdy but unimposing malt. Therefore it doesn’t get too crazy on the hop front but is enjoyably bitter. If this were Summit’s standard IPA I’d hold them in higher esteem -- this is a solid direction, and hopefully they reformulate some of their standards based on the success of the Unchained series.

Definitely a hop monster and bolder offering from Summit which in recent years have been doing some exploring. Citrus and fruity aroma. Flavors of grapefruits, juicy apricots, and bubblegum. Slightly acidic at the finish. Overall, a nice find and should satisfy any hophead.

Bottle from sherm1016...thanks! This is a future favorite from Summit! Pours a bright amber / orange with white head...fruity nose followed by a hoppy taste and somewhat bitter (pleasantly so) finish...this is a good one...hope summit makes it a regular. Tasty.

12oz bottle from Downer Wine and Spirits. Pours a bright, light amber color with a white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, mango maybe. Medium body on the palate with soft, creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, bready, hoppy, a little bitter, pine, with a clean, bitter, pine hop finish. Very tasty.

Bottle to snifter. Pours bright amber with a large sudsy white head that dissipates to a soapy film a some spotty lacing. Aroma is floral spruce and grapefruit with grassy malt mixed all together. Taste is piny bitterness and clean with a malty backbone. Palate is clean and bright with a chalky dry finish. A good step above there standard IPA! Will be waiting for 12 packs of this stuff!
