The fifth beer in the Unchained Series will be from brewer Nate Siats and is an Imperial Pumpkin Porter. Nate is a big fan of pumpkins and wants to do this up right, starting with where the pumpkins come from. The small, local, organic farm that is providing the pumpkins just so happens to be owned by Charles Jones, one of the strong fellas who work on our keg line! Nate’s desired flavor profile in his own words- A dark, chocolaty, full bodied beer with a slight bitter after taste. Evenly spiced with a hint of pumpkin, you would think you were sitting down for thanksgiving dessert. Perfect for a cool, fall afternoon.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2011 Bottle... Pours dark brown with a mid-sized, beige head. Good retention. The bouquet is very reminiscent of chocolate pumpkin pie - if there is such a thing. Full-bodied and oily with nearly-expired carbonation. Up front, the chocolaty-sweet flavor offers a nice amount of raw pumpkin and subtle pumpkin pie spices. Burnt, carbonaceous bitterness balances things out on the backside - without diminishing the rich, chocolate and pumpkin pie essences. Roasty, bittersweet, lightly acidic finish. Exciting brew from an otherwise humdrum brewery. Bottle courtesy of HonusWagner!

Bottle: Pours a mostly opaque black with a creamy froth of beige head. Has a lightly roasty dark caramel and chocolate nose with some pumpkin pie spice. Starts with good fullness and sweet toasty dark maltiness with a chewy pumpkin flavor and good roasty malty balance in the finish. An enjoyable and complex brew.

Bottled. Poured very deep brown with a short-lived dark beige head.. great color, but the head didn’t stick around very long. The aroma picked up lots of sweeter chocolates with fine accents from pumpkin meat, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla.. sweet and totally decadent. The flavor found sweeter chocolates and pumpkin meat at first, with some acrid roast coming shortly after, and continuing through the finish.. burnt, smoky malts and pumpkin-y spices accented.. balance was solid. Medium-bodied with ideal carbonation on the palate.. a touch of malty sourness worked well here.. not the greatest flow, but balance between the components was very good, and I’d drink it every day.

Tasted at the big “SeaBass has got to go” tasting courtesy HonusWagner. Pours mahogany with tan head. The aroma has dark roasted malts, some burnt malts, mild pumpkin meat notes and mild winter spices in the background. The taste is similar with roasted malts to burnt malts leading the way creating a slight roasted malt astringency drying sensation. Well behind those notes is a thin layer of pumpkin and smooth cinnamon and nutmeg like spices.
