Gold Sovereign: Where the past meets the future. Combining a 19th century recipe with 21st century ingredients, Gold Sovereign seeks to emulate the pale ales of the Victorian era using ingredients that have only become available in the last few years. The ultra-modern barley variety Westminster gets the traditional malting approach through organic cultivation and malting by hand on the floor. Highly disease and insect-resistant hedgerow hops were developed from classical varieties using time-honoured breeding techniques. These ingredients are combined with a unique English yeast to produce a refreshingly drinkable beer with a solid malt base and assertive character. Expect this unfiltered ale to have an aroma of pear, apricot and spicy orange, leading to a pronounced hop bitterness and malt flavour reminiscent of freshly baked bread.

Picked up single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, MN. Pours a clear golden amber colored brew with a thin off-white head that dissipates to a film top. Aroma of some citrus and floral hops, a hint of apple, and golden grain malt. Taste is dry and mildly bitter English hops, some medicinal herbs and some golden grain malt. Finish is semi-dry, earthy herb and bitterness that slowly disappears.

12 oz. Bottle. Clear golden yellow pour with a tight soapy head that fades to a film and collar. Aroma is grassy hay and grain with some faint funk that some may call hops. Taste is more grassy malt and grain with a spice hop. Palate is thin to medium feel with a fizzy chaulky finish. Not overly impressed with this one. Could be a good summer drinker if cheaper!

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours gold with a small white head. Aroma is orange marmelade (guerde called that one), some peach, apple, and light floral soapiness as well. The taste is barley heavy, with fruit (I think peach again), a little cracker, and just the right amount of offsetting bitterness. Good mouthfeel, smooth, with lingering bitterness and barley in the finish. Not very exciting, but an enjoyable beer nonetheless. Thanks again, Andy!

(bottle) Pours a lightly hazed light straw color with a medium sized white head. Nice aroma here. It’s subtle, but quite complex, with contrasting scents of malt and hop that alternate in-between each sip. Sometimes the aroma can be crackery, somewhat doughy, and it resembles toasted bread. The hop scent is mainly a showcase of orange marmalade, with a unique spiciness present which is vaguely similar to coriander and bears a passing resemblance to a belgian witbier. Some tea-like scents and earthiness are also present. Flavor is restrained, but again is well-executed, with the crackery malt showing up in force, and the orange marmalade following right behind, yielding a jam over bread flavor I thoroughly enjoyed. Bitterness hits pretty heavy on the finish, and is slightly astringent. Again tea-like. Mouthfeel is medium, borderline light, with low carbonation. This is a perfect mouthfeel for this style of beer, and it makes the beer incredibly drinkable. For some reason I always crave bitters (and geuze) in the spring, and this beer certainly satisfied that craving.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2011 Pours a hazy gold color with a small but well retained head that leaves some nice lace. The aroma is fruity and peachy but really fairly mild all together. The flavor is something else entirely, dry, bitter, & crisp this is an ale of great class and character. The hops seem to have a good deal of depth while maintaining a dominantly herbal character. Thie beer is also fruity in a reserved way as well. The bitterness is very nice and lends to a great finish that begs you for another drink. The maltiness is slightly grainy, and crackery, but just very bright all around. I just feel like I could drink a whole lot of this. After drinking three more bottles of the beer this weekend I’m inclined to give it an even higher score. This beer is maginifique!

Tap. Clear light orange pour with a white head. Aroma is grass and sweet. Full malty mouthfeel. Just enough hops for flavor but not bitter at all. Bread and grass flavored. Very good.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beer. Indications of style were cloudy, perhaps apropos of this unfiltered beer. Nose was full bodied lager, like the best lawnmower beer you could hope for. Extremely clean mouthfeel and finish, without the potential metallic overtones. Didn’t look unfiltered, but the corpus of this fine elixir made up for that. Reminiscent of: Goose Island Honker’s Ale. For those seeking a solid, clean ale without the sometimes overbearing, perfumed hop profile...this just might be your ambrosia. Extremely glad to have this and a wonderful addition to the Unchained series.
