Gold Sovereign: Where the past meets the future. Combining a 19th century recipe with 21st century ingredients, Gold Sovereign seeks to emulate the pale ales of the Victorian era using ingredients that have only become available in the last few years. The ultra-modern barley variety Westminster gets the traditional malting approach through organic cultivation and malting by hand on the floor. Highly disease and insect-resistant hedgerow hops were developed from classical varieties using time-honoured breeding techniques. These ingredients are combined with a unique English yeast to produce a refreshingly drinkable beer with a solid malt base and assertive character. Expect this unfiltered ale to have an aroma of pear, apricot and spicy orange, leading to a pronounced hop bitterness and malt flavour reminiscent of freshly baked bread.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beer. Indications of style were cloudy, perhaps apropos of this unfiltered beer. Nose was full bodied lager, like the best lawnmower beer you could hope for. Extremely clean mouthfeel and finish, without the potential metallic overtones. Didn’t look unfiltered, but the corpus of this fine elixir made up for that. Reminiscent of: Goose Island Honker’s Ale. For those seeking a solid, clean ale without the sometimes overbearing, perfumed hop profile...this just might be your ambrosia. Extremely glad to have this and a wonderful addition to the Unchained series.

[Bottle] Darker golden color with a fizzy white head on top. Nose is of bready malts, white pepper, apricot and earthy hops. Taste includes more of the same, with dough and cereal grains coming through the most. Herbal hop finish is light but pleasant. A nice beer. Tasting notes from early 2012.

Pours a slightly hazy, deep golden color with zero head. Aroma has a deep grainy nose, light grassy hops with a light flowery ending. Flavor starts off with a light grainy bite and very sweet with a light tangy taste to it. Middle has fruity notes of apple, peach and pear with a light biscuit malt and a light horse blanket funk at the finish . Body is light with low carbonation and an oily sugar feeling. Very good brew as a whole. The only negative was the lower carbonation on this brew.

this might’ve been great fresh but now it is an oxidized mess. Trational-tasting.

A 12 oz bottle courtesy of Strykzone. Pours a hazy golden amber with a white head and light lacing. Nose of flora hops. Medium body. Flavor is slightly sour with a little fruit. English bitter classic.

From bottle. Slightly hazy gold body. Sudsy head. Nice malty nose with a hint of bitter hop. First thing on my tongue is a low carbonation impression, but to tickles my tongue anyway. Golden malt taste accented by peppery hops, an edge of stone fruit. Nice iteration of an English bitter with a bit more hop for American palates.

12oz bottle. Golden pour with a medium sized white head. Aromas of toast, grass, some fruitiness, and bread. Tastes of grass, citrus, some earth, and bread.

Straight gold in color with a large, off-white head that is mostly lasting. Aroma: grapefruit flesh, orange rind, leather, pineapple - not very pungent, but pleasant nonetheless. Flavor starts out as a nicely balanced sweet/bitter, but the bitterness wins out in the end, turning leathery and resinous. As it warms, I pick up a little smoke and peat in the nose. Alcohol is noticeable, particularly in the finish, but not overly so. Dry aftertaste with a little rye. A great offering. Thanks Narnad!

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2012 Originally tasted and recorded 4/8/11. Aroma has a nice hop character featuring mostly earthy aromas with a bit of spiciness as well. The pour us a hazy golden with a nice large head. A pretty attractive beer. It has a decent hop bitterness on the finish. Overall a pretty solid beer.

Bottle courtesy of nuplastikk, thanks! Cloudy golden brown color, large fluffy white head with good retention. Aroma of grass, earth, summer fruit. Taste is malty and spicy rye bread, bitter and very dry finish.. Nice.

Had this one bottled, thanks Wyl! Hazy, dark golden pour with a wispy white head, earthy and somewhat citrusy nose with a fine, balanced taste which tapers nicely into a sharp, citrusy hoppy bite at the end. Excellent!
