COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Medium bodied ale with a pronounced citrus/passion fruit/mango aroma, slight astringent/burnt character from the black malt. Think black colored hoppy ale.

Bottled sample. Near black with medium carbonation. C-hops hit first on the nose, followed up by milk chocolate and faint vanilla caramel. A very well balanced orange, chocolate, vanilla, and charred malt blend in the mouth with a solid bitterness. The char lingers a bit on the finish, but in a a nice way. A very well executed black IPA.

Draft. Dark brown pour, quick fading beige head. Aroma of dark malts, toast, dry citrus hops. Medium to fuller bodied with strong carbonation. Meh, its okay, not hoppy enough.

12oz bottle. Opaque brown-black with a steady beige head. Tropical fruit aroma. Really nice summit(?) hop taste, very tropical and big to be able to stand up the specialty malts. Not as syrupy of cloying as some Black IPAs can be, this one is really well done. Has that true to style oily black malt taste, but also really has quite an impressive hop profile, way beyond what you might expect from Summit.

Bottle to glass. Great aroma with citrus fruit notes. Some chocolate notes on the nose as well. Black color with white head. Not too bitter, but very excellent. I enjoy this beer. One of my favorite black IPAs

Tap at champps ridgedale. Rich roasted malt with hops evident. Mostly opaque body with dark tab head and nice lace.Tastes like it smells with a strong hop presence. Very good. One of the best summit beers I’ve had.

Tap at Stub and Herbs. Black pour with a large frothy off white head. Aroma is mild grapefruit. Medium palate. Sharp grapefruit on taste with some roastiness. Good stuff.

Pours a deep black color, ruby when held up to the light. The beer has a big head which leaves good lace.

The aroma is pine and grapefruit hoppiness with a very light roast character. This beer is very aromatic and it smells very nice.

The flavor is roasty, about as roasty as it is hoppy and it’s big on both. There is some of the advertised astringency mid palate which is really not pleasant but the high bitterness and fruity hop character make this a pretty tasty beer all around.

Clear dark brown, almost black, pour with a chunky off white head that fades fairly quickly to good lacing. Aroma is wet coffee grounds, chocolate, roasted malt, fairly big slug of pine and citrus hops. Taste is a bunch of roasted malts, and lots and lots of coffee grounds mixing somewhat unpleasantly with the citrus hops. I am usually a BIPA fan, but the mix of burnt malts, coffee grounds, and hops get a bit too astringent for me.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Appearance: Dark reddish brown (not quite black) with a moderate, light tan head and a single lacing ring. Aroma: Very tropical hops over caramel, chocolate, molasses and light smoke. Taste: Definitely tastes more IPA than Black. The hops are fairly tropical (grapefruit, mango) but are more spicy and metallic than the aroma indicated. The malt body is relatively light with bittersweet chocolate, caramel and a touch of coffee and smoke. Fairly bitter on the finish. Palate: Moderate carbonation with a medium body. Very dry. Feels like an IPA. Not as smooth as some American Black Ales. Overall: Another winner from Summit’s Unchained series, who are about 6 for 8 in my book. For a moderate alcohol Black Ale (many are really Doubles), this is among the best. I also appreciate the use of unorthodox Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand) hops.
