Brewer Eric Harper has gone old school for Summit Unchained #11. As in, Old 152. Inspired by the Kentucky Common beer style that was popular before Prohibition, it actually uses a sour mash of maize and rye in addition to traditional malts and Cluster hops (just about the only hop available in the U.S. back then).
The results are anything but sour, yielding a chestnut-colored brew with a slightly spicy floral aroma, biscuit, caramel notes and crisp, clean bitterness.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle at the airport. A big fruity hop nose, floral, fruity, slight citrusy. Spicy malt character, coffee, chocolate, toffee. Interesting, the hop flavor is light allowing the malts to shine.

Pours a hazy deep orange color with a very dense, creamy light tan head. Aroma has a light nutty nose with a lot of toasted malt presence with a light spicy rye like finish and some light citrus and grassy hoppiness. Flavor has a strong hop presence but not the typical strong hops we are use too as its not the an in your face, pound your buds type. The hops is a light citrus and strong grassy combo that pairs very well with the strong toasted malt presence in this brew. Body is light with a light oily feel. Overall a very tasty brew. I love the hops and malt combo for this brew. They should mass produce this one as it’s a fantastic anytime type of brew.

Pours a clear, copper-brown with smallish, lasting head. Aroma of malt and grain, with some hops. Flavor is rather hoppy, and a bit like a brown ale. Bitter finish. Interesting.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Heritage Liquors, Minnesota. Pours a clear medium amber colored brew with a thick and rocky off-white head that leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of multi-grain malt, some light medicinal hops with citrus, a touch of caramel and apple skin. Taste is medium bodied, some extra carbonation with flavors of multi-grain malt with caramel, earthy spices, a touch of vegetables and grassy hops. Finish slightly dry, has a sharp spicy hop aftertaste, a hint of metallic and then a crisp finish.

Pours light copper with an immense head of closely packed, tiny bubbles and thin, tight rings of lacing, especially near the top of the glass. Aroma is very earthy - grass and mud - and a little malty. Flavor is light - malt and a minor hop bite to go with the hints of grass and dirt. Not much of a fan of earthy beers normally, but this is decent and drinkable, if not outstanding.

Taste is nice rye, birch, bread, caramel, oak, birch, finishing woody, dry, spicy and slight fruity notes finish it out. Tasty!

Bottle from wegmans. Pours clear copper with a medium sized white head. The aroma Is rye forward with some caramel malt balance. The taste is rye ipa style with a nice, light malt balance. Nice easy drinker.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light amber with good, foamy, beige head / Bright nose of pine, rye and citrus / Medium body, soft, delicate, hoppy, with good balance and lightly bitter finish / Flavors of dry rye spice, grapefruit, pine, and a touch of caramel / Not like the couple other Kentucky Commons that I’ve had, more like a rye ipa, but a very nice brew no matter which.

Bottle. Reddish copper hue when held ot light. The khaki head is long lasting and relatively dense. A dusty smelling brew with some notes of old books and apple core. A little bit leathery in the nose. This taste like old leather and salty caramel. A bit of robust hopping is there, but certainly not overdone, just hints of citrus in the back end of each drink. There is some note of pear and celery in the finish. The body is softly carbonated and that adds to the smoothness. This is actually quite nice and interesting. It is like a petite amber, and made to be a crowd pleaser. Smooth and relatively light, but enough going on to keep you interested, a great balance that is rarely done correctly. Summit has a winner with this one.
