Apr 15, 2005 Last of the Summit 4-pack sampler, and possibly the best. A very dark, reddish-brown body capped with a light brown head. Malty aromas with some prune and green leaves... alcohol scents when warm. Flavor starts bitter, reveals coffee, caramel and sweetness, then finishes sour. Medium-to-full-bodied with an almost-syrupy texture, but not potent... dare I say "sessionable"? A good, porter-caliber ale.

Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
Apr 14, 2005 Pouring deep mahogany with a thin tan head, this has a deep roasted aroma with chocolate and nuts and coffee and spices. It’s a bit thing and watery in the mouth. The thusly weakened flavor still has plenty of roasted malts to enjoy along with bittersweet chocolate and some mild hopping on the finish. Odd ale.

Mar 22, 2005 Dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma is very malty with nuts, some dark fruit and roast. Flavor of malt with some chocolate and tangy fruitiness.

Mar 22, 2005 Very dark garnet; small, frothy, off-white head; light lacing down the glass. Great aroma loaded with malts, and a touch of nutmeg and licorice; perhaps some dark cherry. Flavor, also, is mostly malts, with just a hint of chocolate; finish is chocolate and licorice and maybe even a little vanilla. Medium body but too thin for the style, in my opinion. A long way off from Anchor’s winter ale, but a decent beer; just a little weak in flavor and body.

Mar 12, 2005 Updated: Mar 23, 2005Pours very dark with a fluffy light head that subsides quickly. Aroma is lightly hoppy. A bitter aftertaste is the best part of a less then average flavor.

Mar 4, 2005 A gift from those who know winter to those of us that have to bear the cold. Thank you, Summit. I actually look forward to winter, in part because of this fantastic beer. Malty, slightly sweet malt aroma, wonderfully robust, yet crisp. The sweetness is nicely balanced by a slight bitterness. Better on tap, but still great at home.

Mar 1, 2005 Deep dark brown pour. Nice off-white head, quickly diminished. Average lacing. Only light wafts of malt, practically no aroma. May be due to temperature (cold) of brew. Ultra caramel and burnt sugar. Like a luscious dulce de leche. Wonderful burnt malt. Very sweet, rich, and smooth. Flavor seemed a little off and eggy to me, like the tap was bad.
