Johan the Barleywine is the first beer ever brewed by Sun King! It is an homage to Dave and Clay’s dear friend and fellow brewer, John "Johan" Hanley, who passed away several years ago. Johan is an English-Style Barleywine that was fermented with a special blend of 10 different ale yeasts. It has a huge malt punch that is delicately balanced with hops from the Northwest. We cellared Johan for an entire year before releasing it and there is a very limited amount available (we are cellaring and barrel-aging a large portion of it).

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2014 Can: Thanks, Tim. A nearly clear, deep copper & mild ruby color with not much head, just a small, gray collar. Aroma of steely, lightly metallic caramel & toffee with an undercurrent of staleness that might be the first sign of oxidation. Stale paper. Some sweet, bruised prunes in the finish. Taste is quite boozy with mild fusel & phenolic notes; plums, light fruity esters, some anise, & a bit of metallic caramel in the finish. Oxidation not as vibrant but this still tastes a little "stale" or just old.

Can... Dark, lightly hazed, deep-copper pour with a mid-sized, creamy, mushroom-colored head. Decent retention. The aroma is a merging of toffee and brown sugar accompanied by a light splash of tawny port. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and jazzy carbonation. The flavor is a sweet, vinous intermingling of dates and vinous port wine. Alcoholic, malty, dark fruit finish. Can courtesy of the always generous (and damn handsome) StFun!

Pours a dark brown/amber with a small tan head that leaves lots of lacing down the glass. Smells of toffee with some notes of caramel and a bit boozy as well. Up front there are lots of sweet malts with some heavy syrupy toffee taste with some night toasted malts backing it up. A little bit of citrus also makes an appearance. Finishes very smooth and velvety with just a slight hint of booze. Mouthfeel is very thick. Pretty syrupy without becoming cloying. Low carbonation level. The first beer brewed at my favorite local brewery, this one has gotten a lot better with some age on it. One more from this one time release that will be getting a bit more age before enjoying it. *Edit* Not reflected in review scores, but cracked one open pre-DLD 4/27/12 and it is even better. Really mellowed out a bit and is a damn good beer

Can thanks to StFun! Rich dark brown pour, minimal carbonation and lasting lacing with an aroma of super malty sweet caramel and earthy. Flavor is also leathery malt, hoppy abrasive caramel and resiny and finished slightly rye like, herbal and bitter. Really dug this and would love to try this again, thanks Josh!

Can shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike. The beer is dark orange/copper hued with a quarter inch of lasting tan head. The aroma offers sweet malt, toffee, booze, hops. Smells appropriate for the style. Smooth flavor , with malt, fruit, and hop flavors gaining strength as the beer warms. Alcohol is present, but in the background. Overall, a solid barleywine. Recommended. Shared can with friends. Poured a light ruby color. Aroma was fresh grain notes. Was surprised that this was as smooth as it was. Hop character is pretty low, despite the claims of 60IBUs on the can. Sweet character notes, pretty tasty.

Can courtesy of someone who yourefragile and I coordinated on a trade with. I never got the name, but thanks. Served in a wine glass. Pours a nice caramel color with a moderate white head. Bit of a collar. The nose carries some toffee and caramel plus a faint bit of hops and alcohol. Flavor has a bit of hops in the background to go with a good malt presence. Nice toffee and caramel plus slight fruit. Medium body and good carbonation. Pretty good.
