Poff the Magic Dragon is an IPA brewed with a large amount of flaked rye. The rye adds a spicy kick to the malt backbone which plays nicely with the heavy citrus hop punch.

Amber-ish pour with a thin off white head. Aroma of hops and some sweet caramel. Body is mild with a smooth texture. One of the better offerings this summer.

Draft on tap at Haymarket’s Sun King Takeover (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich glowing copper hue, rich haze, fiery sunset red edges with a frothy offwhite head atop that laces well and sticks around. Aromas are rich bursting citrusy grapefruit and lemons, touches of florals and grass compliment. Solid rich fresh vibe trails into just a touch of bready malts, touch of rye. Very dry and hoppy. Initial is medium bodied offering a smooth front end with rich grapefruit and citrusy flavors, firm bitterness, with good floral and gentle rich grapefruit rind that grows. Middle offers a touch of malt, rye and biscuits, bread, but quickly moves back to a dry hoppy backend. Rich grapefruit rind, fruit, and juice. Backend is dry and rich, a touch of sweetness in the middle offers some weirdness but really dries up and bitter backend. Rich grapefruit. Great Rye IPA, for sure.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2013 On tap at Haymarket. Pours a clear amber red with an off white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice pine and grapefrut note with a nice grain backbone. Flavor has pine with and a growing grapefruit note with a nice bread backing. Very drinkable.

This ryePA has a beautiful ruby/coopery body, citrus aroma and deep, hoppy, dry taste with a taste of the grapefruit ipa that sun king brews. They nailed the style with the dryness, very enjoyable.

Growler shared for Brother Eric’s 30th. Pours clear red/orange with thin off-white head. Nose is sweet citrus hops and some rye. Flavor is a heavy, sharp, biting citrus taste with some saltiness and a tasty rye component that rounds out nicely. Very good venture for Sun King.

On tap at the brewery tasting room. Pours a dark reddish brown with lots of lacing and a thin head. Aroma is nice and hoppy, full of fruit and dark candied sugar. Nice spice note as well, and a hint of burnt biscuits in the background. Spicey on the palate as well. The malts balance out the hops nicely. Overall a nice beer, but I dig Sun King’s darker offerings a lot more than their hoppier ones. Just my tastes.
