On draft at the brewery. Charred barley mixed with a prominent phenol note pace the aroma with minor notes of black licorice and plums. Pours glossy black with a thin but incredibly even khaki head. Sweet caramel and a quite bitter rye taste clash at first. The taste is further hampered late by a thin stale coffee note and a slightly rancid nuttiness (somewhat like peanuts and walnuts) lingers in the fairly dry finish. Meh.

Draft at brewpub. Deep mahoganny. Good Tan head. Enjoyable example of a less common style which I tend to really enjoy. The smokey and roasty malt profile is excellent. Some cocoa. Earthiness. Great character.

Ticked this months ago.
Poured up at the brewpub with nice deep rutty red to mahogany body supporting a tiny dark tan head. The aroma is a little timid offering snippets of dark roasted maltiness and some toffee. The taste delivers a mix of dark roasted malts, some smooth black licorice and then faint hints of yeasty notes that border on some esteriness. To midway and into the finish a moderate level of burnt malts comes to the surface and makes itself known among the other flavors.

Pint at the brewpub. Pours a deep red, near black. The aroma is malty with evident lager crispness and cereal. This is a little roasty, but not as much as a few others in the style. There’ s just a hint at coffee. The flavor is grainy and not heavy. Overall, it’s a mild schwarzbier but still a decent session brew.
