3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Lively gold pour - soapy, short-lived head - nose of honey, soft herbal notes, crisp, grassy noble hops - quite inviting - fairly full mouthfeel for something so light - dry, crisp, and moderately bitter up front - medium sweetness develops through the middle, along with some pleasant, subtle herbal and wildflower notes - the finish dries out again, and develops a slightly chalky texture that detracts from the refreshing character you want from the beer - otherwise fairly good

(Sample Date: 3/21/2010 Source:Other) Malty with spicy hop character. Very little fruitiness. Clear light golden with little head. Dry malty flavor and cracker like graininess. Finish is medium sweet with touch of residual bitterness.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Best consumed as fresh as possible I suspect. This sample shows a little age but otherwise a very good alternative to old world pilsner. Some champagne-like biscuit on the nose and some grassy notes. Body is light with mild citrus and more grass. Fizz is lively and in this instance actually adds to the beer. All in all very subtle and simple but I thought it worked very well.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at the Publican in Chicago. Pours a rich golden with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is richly malty with a light floral note. Tastes sweet with a mild malt character upfront than develops some nice lemon and floral notes with a light bitterness. A really nice Kolsch. Crisp, light and refreshing.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled post BJCP training session courtesy of maltdawg. Medium yellow, nice head. Floral hoppy aroma. Flavor matches, quite crisp. Clean malt. Hops more up front than expected. Very slight lactic note on finish. Nice.

I guess Kölsch travels about as well as Bitter. There’s a bit of round fruitiness here, but it’s rather lifeless and the little bitterness there is is dull. Sad.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bright straw yellow body with a light eggshell white head. The nose was doughy with some peanuts and a little bit of hay. The taste has some bitter bread crust with notes of tobacco and leather. There is also some apple core. Overall, a little bit light, but certainly interesting and a pleasure with a little bit of musk. I am fairly impressed. Bright, fresh and lively, this is delicious. This is what light beers should aspire to become in the US.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Golden colour with mediumsized fluffy head. Aroma is quite much bready malts, some saltwatery notes, some slight fruity and earthy notes as well. Flavour is quite much the same with rather big focus on the maltyness. Gets some slight grainy notes as it warms up. Not a that solid Kölsch.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Beer. Straight forward good beer. Nothing special, just good beer. Poured with a medium off white head and a tiny bit of lace. Color is a clear amber. Aroma is just plain, fresh common beer, more of a world lager than anything spicy. Flavor is similar but sweeter, although not too sweet. Soft body and good carbonation. Nice clean bittersweet finish. Session beer.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottled (Bierzwerg, BB 07/2010)
Clear pale golden color, steady white head. Light citrusy fruity, plasticky corn malty nose. Flavor has some lemony fruityness and maltyness, but also boring corn-like and grainy notes. Foamy carbonation. Typical bottled Kölsch: clean but not very exciting. I always wonder why top raters give to bottled Kölsch 3.x ratings as these taste exactly same than tropical lagers.
