Can from local Yamaya. Light roast malt initial, with a hint of coffee and some yeast. Dark brown, near black, with a thick head of fat bubbles. Light and very pleasant roastiness, cereal-like; mid brings out some coffee notes; finish is mild a sweet. Thin-medium body. Tasty, but not really bursting with flavors. A bit thin for the style. Very drinkable.

On tap at TGI Tokyo . nice and dark with full tan head .nice malty aroma with a touch of chocolate . taste is toasted malts , touch of caramel and cocoa . it is not a stout though - a bit too watery for that but pleasant and drinkable . in fact it was an oasis in the desert of pale lagers on offer here . So we had several .

12 ounce can brought back from Nihon by the wife. Pours a pure black hue with a medium swirling cream colored head. A light nose of toast and some metal. A pleasant flavor; smooth toasted malts, chocolate, even a hint of fruit. Some metallic flavors. Nice.

On draught dispenser machine at United Airlines lounge at Narita airport. Pours an opaque dark brown with think ran head and lasting lace. Subtle dark malt aroma when stil cold. Creamy mouthfeel. Even dry/sweet dark malt flavor balance. Slight dryness and very slight gritty texture hint toward cocoa over chocolate. Clean, interesting, very drinkable.

dark brown with a tan head. Lightly roasted malts, some caramel, and cocoa in the aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor has some roasted malts, some molasses, light fruits, and a touch of cocoa. A really nice beer. Easy to drink but with plenty of character (for a macro). Iíve had copious amounts of this one.

Draught at the Hankyu Beer Garden in Osaka. Rich black color, nose of chocolate, caramel, roasted malts. Relatively nice flavor of chocolate, dark malts. Flavorful and well-balanced. Not anything fantastic, but very good for a Japanese major brewer. Far better than in the can.

A smooth pour and pleasant chocolatey nose canít hide the fact that this is a rather bland beer. The flavour has ssome surprisingly good choco barley notes and a heavy emphasis on a roasted quality which is nice. But the thin, oily body and transparent mouthfeel make it difficult to fully emrace. When drinking this, I kept wishing it to magicaly turn into a stout..

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can: Pours a dark ruby color, nearly black until you look through the light, a nice, fairly retentive tan head and nice lacing. The nose is lightly roasty, sweet roast and fruit, some grass and malt. Not too intense in the nose. The flavor though is a bit more flavorful, some sharp roast and lots of sweet molasses, some slight coffee and cocoa, but overall a thin schwarz with a bit of hop bitterness in the tail. Ok.
