Can from World Liquor Nakai. Overall a nice, roasty black beer that was a welcome departure from the standard Japanese pale layers. Great choice in Japan.

Can@Home. Coffee with sugar aroma. Black, beige head, no lace. Sweet, milk chocolate, hints of cola and coffee, light sugary. Dry-ish. Flavourful, easy, too easy.

Can on the Shinkansen. Nice roasted malt nose, coffee crema, touch of chocolate. Body a tad thin, but there is creaminess and depth there. Still one of my favorite mainstream beers in Japan.

Tap at a Doma Doma izakaya. Dark brown creamy golden head. Aroma is bit roasty, bit creamy. Decent enough. Taste is similar, quite malty, roast again, touch of choc. Quite thick and creamy. Pretty decent. Premium malts is my macro of choice and both are decent enough. Not wildly exciting, but solid enough to not mind drinking a load of in an izakaya.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma: licorice, chocolate, chocolate, yeast
Flavor: rich medium dark chocolate, roasted grain, licorice, finishes medium long with mildly bitter coffee and grain notes
Comment: pretty good for a large Japanese commercial brewery. The Suntory house style (malty with mild bittering for their premium beers) works well here.

Can from local Yamaya. Light roast malt initial, with a hint of coffee and some yeast. Dark brown, near black, with a thick head of fat bubbles. Light and very pleasant roastiness, cereal-like; mid brings out some coffee notes; finish is mild a sweet. Thin-medium body. Tasty, but not really bursting with flavors. A bit thin for the style. Very drinkable.

On tap at TGI Tokyo . nice and dark with full tan head .nice malty aroma with a touch of chocolate . taste is toasted malts , touch of caramel and cocoa . it is not a stout though - a bit too watery for that but pleasant and drinkable . in fact it was an oasis in the desert of pale lagers on offer here . So we had several .

12 ounce can brought back from Nihon by the wife. Pours a pure black hue with a medium swirling cream colored head. A light nose of toast and some metal. A pleasant flavor; smooth toasted malts, chocolate, even a hint of fruit. Some metallic flavors. Nice.
