Enjoyed this the other night at my favourite Japanese yakitori restaurant in Adelaide. Went very nicely with Black Angus beef sashimi. A good, malt driven lager, one of the better mega-brewed lagers from Japan.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 GoufCustom (225) - HONG KONG - APR 2, 2013
330ml can; Explosive two-finger head with lasting crumpet-like white foam; Small lacing with notable carbonation. Good aroma of malt, bread and slightly herbal hops; Minimally sweet taste of malt, with bread, citrus and grassy hops; Medium body, oily palate; Taste profile is decent bready malt with very notable citrus and grass throughout, in a orangy background somewhat vaguely resemble a Pale Ale. Interesting! Sweetness is very, very low, a good feature; Hoppiness is pretty strong for a premium lager, very citreous and increasingly bitter through not that astringent, finishing is a bit numbing but not unpleasant. Quite dry after taste, easy to mouth.
Comments: I finally got the chance to try out a brand which is readily available in HK. As a full-malt beer (expensive by Japanese standards), this one is a very solid premium lager - good aroma, no skunky cat-piss malt, very nice head and frothy, expressive hops which contribute a Pale Ale-like palate with mild but penetrating bitterness. A rare feats for Japanese macros, and put many global macros to shame. The slightly expensive import price is justified. Recommended.

Aroma is grainy with some hops in the bunch. This beer tasted the closest to any pilsener that I could find in Japan. Clean taste, nice hops.

On draught machine at
United Airline’s lounge at Narita airport. Pours a clear gold with thick white head. clean aroma with slight hops presence. Moderate carbonation with fine bubbles. Early mild hops bitterness followed by soft hoppy flavor paired with mellow pale malt. No big rice notes or dry finish. Actually very tasty.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 maekchu (1093) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 18, 2012
Can from local supermarket (Izumiya). This is the re-launched version, with deep blue lettering on the can. Soft malt with grassy pils aroma and mild touch of hops. Clear straw color. Persistent, lively carbonation with a constant quarter-inch of foam.Light bready flavor, salt & sugar, Very smooth transition to a light bitter final. Thin body with light carbonation. One of the better mass market macro lagers in Japan -- more body, aroma, and flavors than most have. I wonder about the punctuation in the name: "Malt’s" = malt is? or malt was? or malt has (something)?...
