Suomenlinna Brewery’s reddish lager (4.7% vol) is made of three grains, rye (Secale), wheat (Triticum) and barley (Hordeum), which initials are also in the name of this beer. Seth is a malty, strong-bodied lager, which ryeish body is refreshed with wheat and a mild bite of hops. The name of the beer is also closely linked with the history of Suomenlinna. Gabriel von Seth (1690-1774) was not only the fortress builder Ehrensvärd’s a good friend, also known as a contributor and gourmet. Bastion Seth still stands as part of Suomenlinna seafortress in the middle of a verdant herb garden.

Aroma is somewhat sweet with lots of grainy malt. Flavour is somewhat sweet and rather malty with grain and hints of nuts. Starchy feeling here. Quite bulky to be a microbrewery beer. And failed to pair with my salad with smoked salmon.

It seems that these rye lagers are still not my cup of tea.

A mild taste with notes of hay, caramel and herbs. Not much bitterness, it is very brief. Overall a nice lager, but the mildness of the taste makes it kind of easy to forget, as well. Still, enjoyable!

Golden color, smallish head and some lacing. Aroma has barley malt, some sweet caramel and hay. Taste is malty and has mainly barley in it. Body is light to medium and carbonation is quite high. OK lager.

28.9.2014. Clear pale amber colour. Aroma of grain, malts and butter, herbs. Tastes malty, slight sweetness, grass, some hops, caramel. Its malty lager and ok I guess but these slightly sweet butter lagers are not for me..

Bottle. Clear copper, small whitish head. Nice grainy notes on the nose. Grainy notes in taste. Mild. A bit different aroma and taste here, mostly from the rye I presume, didn’t get much wheaty notes here. Bready and slightly bitter finish.

50 cl bottle from K-supermarket (Kamppi, Helsinki - € 3,89) in August 2014. Pours a hazy darkish amber with an off-white head that drops fast and disappears. Nose is... beautiful! It’s herbal and caramelly, with honey and malts and grass there as well, and it’s crisp too. Taste is also malty, grassy, herbal. Mouthfeel is very soft, body is thin and carbonation is near non-existent. Palate is on the sticky side. An easy-drinker but not exactly refreshing; among the smoothest, softest lagers I’ve had. I really did like it (... as the first drink after a long, hot day sightseeing).

White fluffy fragile top, 99% clear deep golden body. Floral summer scents with caramel malts. Tastes caramel malts, butter, grains, sweet resin, malty-fruity-jammy. A bit dry and normal to palate. Nice finish into bready malts, some bittersweet hops. A good lager-pilsener, where the rye makes it fruity and easy drinkable.
