Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2015 Update: Aroma is a damp, soft, mellow piney citrus with mango. Taste is fruity again with citrus and some boozy malts coming through at the end. Aftertaste is good, with a deeper bitterness mixing with the warming from the booze. Slightly too much booze for 9%. Super creamy palate that thins with the bitterness at the end, staying sticky. This is spendy, but pretty good. -1 Appearance, -1 overall. Good once a year, but nothing I crave year-round.
Pours clear, light golden orange with huge lasting head and insane lacing. The second pour to finish off the 16oz can looks incredible. Aroma is very fruity with lots of citrus, some berries, and a caramel sweetness. Flavor is sweet malts at first, fading quickly into strong citrus hops and resin. Bitterness lasts but mellows enough to be enjoyable. Palate is great. This is a very good beer, and I don’t factor cost into my ratings. That said, the Furious I had last night is equally as enjoyable for half the price. This is a spendy beer! ($16.99 for 4 pack). (10+5+8+5+17=4.5, 4/18/13)

On tap @ Brick’s Pub. Aroma is a citrus (orange) and hops - just superb. Taste is really sweet up front, then hops, with short-lived bitterness and a quick finish that makes this very drinkable. Lingering aftertaste is mild bitterness and biscuity malt. Very good overall. (10+4+8+4+17=4.3, 12/15/12)

This is a down the middle IIPA and it’s fantastic. Huge nose, huge taste and dry and drinkable. Really as good as this style gets.

Aroma is amazing with lots of hops in the nose. Has a sweet taste but doesn’t linger on the tongue.

Thanks to Owen for the can. 20/11/12 canning date. Honey gold color, big, thick white head. Good sticky lacing. Candied grapefruit, candied orange, pine, resin and tropical notes in the nose. Well balanced and just a excellent nose. Grapefruit, orange peel, pine, and resin taste. Supremely fresh and just tasty. Well balanced between bitter and sweet. Long lasting candied pine finish. Sessionable 9% beast.

Can to glass. [[Canned 11/14] Pours a pale amber with a frothy white head. Aroma is citrus and tropical hops - very fresh and clean. This beer tastes AMAZING. It’s like candied grapefruit and orange peel up front giving way to some tropical fruit flavors later. It is extremely crisp and clean in the finish as well. It’s quite light and slick in body with a soft carbonation and bitterness [somehow mixed with sweetness?!] finally showing up late in the finish. Overall this is an incredible double IPA. Probably my favorite to date. HUGE thank you to DangerRoss for this!

Poured from a pint sized can. Huge hop character, great citrusy, pine, floral, resin. Bready, toast, malty, slight caramel. Very nice double IPA.

Fresh abrasive from John, brewed less than 2 weeks earlier. Wafts hops several feet. Light yellow with a big head. Big IBU. Good drinkability. Orange, tangerine, fantastic IPA, great hops. Crazy.

8oz pour from a cask tapped by Omar himself minutes ago. Brilliant all around with one hell of a nose. Extra pound of hops in the cask. Dang it all. This review sucks, but the beer is epic. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
