Sure weíre abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omarís parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But letís be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2010 On tap @ Lunar. Pours faintly hazy burnt orange with a nice white head. Very citrusy and floral aroma with tons of hops. Taste is very enjoyable. Nice and bitter, but not too oily and under-balanced.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2014 Draft at Jerryís. Hazy amber-gold with big, foamy off-white head / Rich, creamy nose of pine, weed, citrus, bread / Medium body, a touch watery, soft, light fruit, lots of bitterness / Flavors of bread, oats, pine, orange, lemon, cream / Not the best Iíve had from this fine brewer.

UPDATED: FEB 24, 2014 On tap @ Maproom Saturday. Big IIPA! The aroma is intense, strong fresh amarillo hop, you can tell this one is going to have a kick ass bitter hop flavor. The taste is just a suspected, just not too balanced in my opinion. Over done on the bitterness and no much malt backbone. Taste of pine, citrus and fresh hops. A real intense IIPA. Could have let this sit and mellow a bit. But oveall a nice IIPA Re-Rated - Aroma has strong citrus notes. Grapefruit may dominate and offset the bitter feel, but doesnít completely hide the nice hop profile. Body is more full than it initially lets on. Tremendous lacing down the glass. Lovely

Tap @ Maproom. Pours orange with a white head. Awesome hoppy aroma, with heavy grapefruit and a little bit of pine. Great bitter flavor, hops dominate just the way I like it. Grapefruit and other citrus flavors. Oily mouthfeel. Awesome stuff, glad to finally grab a pint.

On tap Firkin Fest 09. Pours a deep orange color, slight sediment, thick foamy head. Flavor is lovely citrusy thick hops and a slightly sugary malt backbone. Notes of citrus fruit, citrus zest, candy sugars, crystal malt. Slightly gritty, I imagine due to the barrel conditioning. Finishes dry and earthy.

pours serious amber with thick white head. nose of heavy hops, grapefruit, floral and pine and a little carmel. taste just as it smells, floral, grapefruit and lots of hops, quite bitter and woody. Really good, too bad Surly wonít make it again.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2010 Have had numerous times now and need to bring it down. Had fresh at Fountainhead yesterday and feel like there just too much malt character. Iím getting a fair amount of C-malts which donít work for me in IIPA. Still good, but not worthy of a 4+. Draft at Binnyís south loop. Pours a mostly clearly amber. Nose is well hopped, tropical fruits, a bit of resin and funky hops. Nothing too over the top. Taste is comparable, very hop-forward with some nice, clean bitterness. Not harsh at all. Lots of fruity notes come through, as does the resiny pine notes. This one is super easy to drink. Good stuff.
