COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

16oz canned 1/8/13. Appearance: crystal clear golden orange with minimal white head disappearing quickly. Aroma: tropical fruits, grapefruit, pineapple, floral notes, grass, pine and some sweet caramel. Taste: bursting throughout with hops; nice floral burst up front with the citrus grapefruit meat and pith bitterness coming quickly after then turning to dank, bitter pine all the way through to the aftertaste with some caramel malt peaking through right before the finish; crazy, delicious bitter. Mouthfeel: thin and smooth with medium carbonation. Overall: de-freaking-licious! Love the multi layered hoppiness. Malt shines through just enough to make it balanced enough for an "abrasive", tongue-scraping hop delight. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16oz can - Aroma - a dry-hop extravaganza. Mangos, oranges, grapefruit and pine needles. Appearance - hazy orange body, 2-finger head, average retention, no lacing Mouthfeel - medium carbonation, medium-full bodied, creamy mouthfeel Flavor - green pepper/vegetal hop, sweet oranges, pine sap pronounced. Long bitter, abrasive finish...heh Overall - if Surly managed to align the flavor with the aroma look out. As it is, an excellent beer.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2014 473ml can served in a pint glass. A: Pours a clear orange color forming a light yellow bubbled big head. Medium retention and lots of molasses lacings left in the glass S: Strong caramel and caramel malts in the nose. Interesting "something else" here. Maybe honey or some spice. A bit of alcohol and tons of flowery and citruses hops T: Slightly sweet caramel upfront. A bit fruity too. Which is followed by a dry and bitter hoppy taste. Hops are herbal and citrus too. A bit fruity. In overall, I would say, perfect! M: Medium to heavy body. Molasses. Medium carbonation and a delicious bittersweet aftertaste O: Excellent drinkability. Absolutely great IIPA. Perfect [ BA Review @ 6/19/2013 ]

"wish list beer from Travis. abrasive pours a dark deep golden. nice head. feel is slick and smooth. 10 weeks or so old, still smells fresh, maybe a little restrained on the hop flavor, which is still vibrant piney and grapefruit peels. very nice. Surly knocks another one out.

50cl can, as Surly Abrasive Ale, exclusive American brew, thx alot to Thomas for bringing this over!, very complex bitter brew, bitter/fruity and slightly woody/malty, very balanced, hazy, good head, very good brew, yet expensive!, ’Only minor notes of ageing; wondering how this awesome beer tasted when fresh...’

The can has a cool cartoon. Hops abound in the nose, strong and piney. On the pour, a murky light yellow appreance with frothy head that dissapates quickly. I like the palate, with a slightly sticky mouthfeel and a light bite on the backside balanced with a mild sweetness. It’s crisp without being overbearing.

2011 backlog. Fresh can from Skyview – thanks Bob. Pours slightly hazy dark gold with a one finger white head. The nose is mango, tangerine and ripe orange. The taste is caramel, fresh citrus, and a nice resin finish that lingers. Nice medium semi-creamy mouth feel. Great DIPA. 4.3

Poured from a can dated 1/7/2014. Aroma - Can smell the aroma as soon as the can is popped - truly amazing. Tons of tropical aroma - perfect. Appearance - golden clear color, lots of carbonation coming up. Half finger of white head that disappears quickly. Taste - Amazing. One of my favorite beers. My only wish is that it was year round rather than seasonal. Palate - Flavor in the front and back of the tongue. Overall - definitely one of my favorite beers around. Glad it is local.
