COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sure weíre abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omarís parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But letís be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

Tap at craft beer festival. Over the top smell of hops. First taste was a slice of heaven. Citrus with just a hint of pine. Great backbone that carries it straight thru. Highly recommend this one.

Holy isht. This is really something! Orange amber pour...beautiful color...smallish head and decent lacing. Huge aroma...grapefruit and flowers. Thick, chewy mouthfeel is notable even before the huge flavor kicks in. Tropical fruity malt flavors with an immensely complex hop bill. Grapefruit, floral, pine, resin...it seems to have a bit of all of it. Very malty and sweet but loads of hop bitterness and a real tart citrus finish. This is really wowíing.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2012 Acquired this in a trade. Itís the first DIPA Iíve had from surly. Stoked to try this and hoping itís still fresh! Poured into a Newcastle glass direct from the fridge. Canned on 12/08/11

A - 2 Finger head, tight and creamy bubbles that were off white and on the tan side. Deep and hazy brown with golden tints. Gorgeous looking beer! A+

S - TONS of pine, tons of hops, tons of brown sugar, caramel and sweetness! I got a bit of citrus but not a lot.

T - Absolutely amazing. A fantastic DIPA with tons of hop, great aftertaste. Iím getting orange, vanilla and brown sugar. Thereís some ginger in here as well.

M - Nice carbonation but not overwhelming. Very drinkable!

O - Iíve had Heady Topper and Pliny the Elder. This is up there with those beers. an A+ in every way. I need to acquire a can fresh.

Update: New batch canned 11/14/12. Fresher than before and my palate is hopefully improved since then.

On the nose, I pick up a lot more grapefruit and citra than last time. I take back that thereís minimal citrus. Taste is super chewy. As great as I remember though and the most close Iíve had to Society & Solitude #4 from Hill Farmstead. Not as bitter as Heady Topper but a fantastic malt backbone, still nice levels of brown sugar, tangerines, grapefruit juice and cranberries. Very happy I have more of this to enjoy over the week. Thanks Dan!!

Pours somewhat clear of yeast, sunset golden, burnt amber like with 1 finger frothy head which over time simmers down. Aroma very apparent, and backed up with bold flavor. At first very smooth almost creamy, then transitions into powerful blast of flavor to your whole mouth missing no taste buds whatsoever.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2013 Sampled @ CBC 2013. Clear yellow to golden color, small white head. Smell and taste malts, tropical fruits, mandarin, mango, grapefruit, bitter and hops. What a beer, superb!

Canned 12/27, just arrived from France44. Beautiful pour, light fluffy head and straw yellow body. Hops all over the place. Simple, hoppy, tart. Finishes buttery, clean. Love it.

Three Taverns Bottle Share. Dear lord. Holy moly. Címon man. Pours lovely clear dark gold with perfect amount of white head. Scent is equal blend of candy, citrus, and evergreen. Bitter bite moves quickly into sweet finish. This may be the best beer in the world, no joke. Bottle - Shared at Tasting

Fresh on draft and in can. Someone I was with once accurately described Abrasive as a double IPA version of the similarly Citra-hopped Zombie Dust. Well said I say. I tried side-by-side with Three Floyds' Dreadnaught (different beers to be sure) and felt that they represented the present and past quintessential Imperial IPA, respectively. These days, I want Abrasive.

A- Pours a tangerine hue with a thick, chunky, 2 finger off white head. S- Punch in the nose of citrusey hops, lots of grapefruit, malty breadiness underneath. T- Caramel, tons of grapefruit as in the nose, pine, citrus fruit. M- Chewy and sticky, medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. D- This will easily be one of my favorite brews of the year. Glad maximum12 sent me 4 ... I cannot see myself letting go of them! By far my favorite surly brew to date.

Rarely do I rate a beer 5/5 but this comes very close: pours a clear golden color with white head. Pine, citrus, floral notes, resin, and some spice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with bite. Very well done DIPA.
