Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

Aroma is amazing with lots of hops in the nose. Has a sweet taste but doesn’t linger on the tongue.

Aroma is fantastic, grapefruit and slight floral notes fill the nose. Taste is sweet and lots of grapefruit. Very in depth flavor. One of the best DIPAs out there, try er out!

Can (canned 1/13/14) poured into a Belgian tulip. Pours a nice golden orange color with a finger of off-white head. Tiny bits of sediment floating throughout. Aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, light floral notes, pine. Tasting notes of big tropical fruit, grapefruit citrus, pine/resin, stone fruit, light floral notes. Medium body with a dry finish. Juicy mouthfeel. Definitely one of the best DIPAs out there.

One of the best IIPA's on the mkt! Hard to believe I can get 16oz for $4.50. Surly knows their way around IPA's ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2015 Light daisy yellow with very fine sediment throughout and a thin, spongy head. Smell is juicy, sweet, complex citrus fruit, mango, pineapple, lots of marijuana. Taste is full, sweet with a bitter, oily layer underneath. Long drying aftertaste. Full-bodied, delicious flavor, perfect balance of sweet, bitter and smooth malt/oatmeal character.

It's hard to imagine a more delicious IPA. Very similar to heady topper. Fragrant, fruity, and bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at craft beer festival. Over the top smell of hops. First taste was a slice of heaven. Citrus with just a hint of pine. Great backbone that carries it straight thru. Highly recommend this one.

Holy isht. This is really something! Orange amber pour...beautiful color...smallish head and decent lacing. Huge aroma...grapefruit and flowers. Thick, chewy mouthfeel is notable even before the huge flavor kicks in. Tropical fruity malt flavors with an immensely complex hop bill. Grapefruit, floral, pine, resin...it seems to have a bit of all of it. Very malty and sweet but loads of hop bitterness and a real tart citrus finish. This is really wow’ing.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2012 Acquired this in a trade. It’s the first DIPA I’ve had from surly. Stoked to try this and hoping it’s still fresh! Poured into a Newcastle glass direct from the fridge. Canned on 12/08/11

A - 2 Finger head, tight and creamy bubbles that were off white and on the tan side. Deep and hazy brown with golden tints. Gorgeous looking beer! A+

S - TONS of pine, tons of hops, tons of brown sugar, caramel and sweetness! I got a bit of citrus but not a lot.

T - Absolutely amazing. A fantastic DIPA with tons of hop, great aftertaste. I’m getting orange, vanilla and brown sugar. There’s some ginger in here as well.

M - Nice carbonation but not overwhelming. Very drinkable!

O - I’ve had Heady Topper and Pliny the Elder. This is up there with those beers. an A+ in every way. I need to acquire a can fresh.

Update: New batch canned 11/14/12. Fresher than before and my palate is hopefully improved since then.

On the nose, I pick up a lot more grapefruit and citra than last time. I take back that there’s minimal citrus. Taste is super chewy. As great as I remember though and the most close I’ve had to Society & Solitude #4 from Hill Farmstead. Not as bitter as Heady Topper but a fantastic malt backbone, still nice levels of brown sugar, tangerines, grapefruit juice and cranberries. Very happy I have more of this to enjoy over the week. Thanks Dan!!
