COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Can from MGM Liquors in Woodbury, MN at the 8th Richmond Gathering on 06/06/2009. Dark brown body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet nutty and caramel aroma with a bit of floral hops. Sweet nutty flavor, some toastiness with a bit of dry caramel and some floral hops. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.

Pours a dark brown with thin tan head. Aroma mild of roasted malt, grain, cocoa, and a bit of coffee. Flavor matches well with the addition of vanilla. Creamy mouthfeel leads to a pretty decent oatmeal brown, but this isn’t uncharted and doesn’t discern itself.

Can with thanks to Dakzale. Pours the color of darkly stained cherry wood with a cola like head of a finger and aromas of earth and nuts. Flavor is very similar and very good. It is very nutty with a little bit of a woody edge to it. Mouthfeel is OK, but I think I would like it to be a bit thicker. As is, I would definitely take more of this, though.

Very deep brown, nice head. Aroma is faintly of nuts. Flavor is lightly nutty and leafy, pine hops on the finish. Hoppy for the style, which is nice.

Can via trade. One guy says they have this on tap at the Minny airport. Really? Why don’t I move to Minnesota again? Oh yeah, it’s cold, flat, and boring. Sort of like your sist-...ok, I won’t go there. Just kidding. Now about the beer. Aroma of sweet malt, nuts, and coffee. Flavor is caramel malt, coffee, nuts, and chocolate. Well-balanced and tasty with a medium palate and smooth mouthfeel. I’d go on a Bender bender any day.

On tap at some place at M/SP airport. Had just enough time to go in either the place with the Surly tap or the place with the Bell’s tap and went with Surly. Pours brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is nutty and malty, with oatmeal, chocolate, and a slight floral presence. This floral thing comes through more in the taste- like tea and lemongrass. A little thin, but the finish is not bad, with citrus and roast.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2009 draught at hopleaf. nose of chcolate covered espresso beans. not as ’crunchy’ as that note can sometimes be, a bit softer and more rounded. comes across as a well balanced porter -- good bitterness despite strong roasted notes. amazing a beer can be this complex at only 5%.

Love most every Surly, but this one not so much. Just seems like a non-descript, brown ale to me. OK malt, some nuts, some coffee, a bit thin if creamy, not much of an aftertaste. Easy to drink, but just leaves me wanting. I should have not had the Furious first, which was outstanding.
