Can via trade with Scoobydank. Pours a medium to dark brown. Nose is caramel and cola maltyness. Entry is a earthy medicinal tone to it. Flavors build with caramel, with tones of cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavor has a bit of perfume to it. Medium bodied.

Thanks to JuiceIsLoose for the taste of Bender. We did a side-by-side with the Cigar City Maduro Brown. Just check the rates to see who won. Freshness could have been a factor, though. Aroma is nutty and slightly roasted. Not nearly as strong as I would want. Flavors and dry toast and oats. Pretty good.

Chocolate, toasty malt and oats flavor with definite hops. Very good beer. For me, Surly can at times be somewhat choppy but when they get it right, my hometown brewers get it really right! More hoppy and dark for the style but its good. I don’t detect as much bitter as I would normally expect from the hop profile. It’s way at the end

Can.
Pours very dark for a brown ale. Really super nose of carmelized sugar and roasted oats, plenty of chocolate malt. Flavor is a bit more confused --- heavily hopped for the style, intriguingly but ultimately unfortunately, a bit nutty in a gently sour brown ale way, but with way more hops driving it through. I’m pleased -- especially by the aroma -- but it’s not quite a slam out of the ballpark.

Can @ chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2008. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel and chocolate aroma with some hoppy hints. Roasted malty chocolate flavor with hints of hops and coffee. Has a roasted malty choclate and coffee finish.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with a good-sized head. Complex mix of flavors--coffee, chocolate, nuts, etc. Very smooth-drinking and delicious. Not quite as intensely (or overpoweringly) full of hops as Furious. This is my favorite Surly beer.

Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. Smells of oats and chocolate. Roasted malts gives flavors of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. I shared this with a relative who commented "I didn’t know dark beer could be this smooth."
