COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

A: Pours a very dark brown with a nice tan had and plenty of lacing. S: Lots of hops for a brown ale, and they really fit in well. Sweet caramel, toffee, and other roasted malts fill this one out. T: Caramel, toffee, citrus/pine hops. Also some mild notes of coffee and chocolate. M: Very rich and tasty. Medium bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. D: Highly drinkable. A very nice offering--I wouldn’t expect anything less from Surly. Serving type: can Reviewed on: 10-01-2009

16oz can from iowaherkeye. Thanks Joey. Served at cellar temperature. Poured a lovely clear dark brown-garnet color. Head was thick, creamy, and light brown with good retention and lacing. Aroma was predominantly of milk chocolate and malted milk balls with whiffs of raisin and peanut. Delicately sweet, medium bodied, and fairly smooth. Tasted of milk chocolate, nuts, subdued flowery hops, light raisin, and a touch of caramel. Yum. Not your typical brown ale.

Can, thanks to GrOve for sharing! Low light brown head. Clear, deep burgundy body. Nutty malt aroma with a sourish, light ashy twist. Notes of yellow fruits, and a hint of cheesy hops. Taste is malt driven, roasted and fairly dry, with a restrained coffee flavor and some mild fruitiness. Very soft on the palate. Mid-bodied. Lasting, roasted and coffe-ish malt finish. Very likeable.

Can thanks to Nate. Pours a opaque dark brown color with a medium tan head. A sweet roasted malt, some smoke and chocolate in the nose. The flavor is sweet and rich; chocolate, cocoa, light vanilla, toasted malts, fairly dry. Enjoyable, very quaffable.

Draught at Ike’s, Minneapolis airport. Dark brown with orange and a fine, tan head. Aroma of dark fruits and chocolate. Flavor of roasted chocolate, caramel, thick malt; fruity too, with a tart touch and a roasty finish, with some bitter hops and a reasonably full mouth. Nice stuff.

This is a tasty beer. Lots of bite and nutty at all. Much better as an oatmeal brown than those nutty ones. Don’t get any negatives from the can either. Excellent.

16oz can courtesy of beeranddogs. Pour is muddy brown with a rocky, fluffy, tan head that sticks around leaving excellent poofy lace along the sides of the glass. Aroma is fresh, floral, light peppermint, mint chocolate chip. Taste is cola, sweet, roasty, bitter chocolate. Soft, bubbly palate. Really just a solid session beer. A good brown ale is a difficult thing to find.
