COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

16oz can. Dark brown with a light tan head. Very roasty with a big coffee aroma. Bitter flavor, with more coffee and some chocolate and a real nice hop kick in the finish. Pretty tasty.

Can from j12601- thanks jay! pours a dark brown with a nice, big, long lasting, cratery tan head. Leaves some aesthetically pleasing lacework on the mf glass. Aroma is toasted malts, aluminum, cream, coffee, and milk chocolate. The metalic note was much more apparent while the beer was cold and the aroma was, unsurprisingly, much more enjoyable after it calmed. Flavor is a creamy, coffee, toasted, roasted malt concoction. pretty nice. Medium body. crisp, clean, refreshing. Good beer- pretty satisfied with the surly canned lineup. Thanks again Jay.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2007 Quick re-rate...12-20-2007
This beer is a kick ass session beer and I wish I could get it locally.
Original rating....
Courtesy of Quake1028. Thanks, John. Sharp malt base aroma with some bright fruit skin featuring apple and grape skins and hints of toasted chocolate and caramel. The body is brown with amber highlights. Very full mouthfeel at first sip. Toasty malts, chocolate, fluffy feeling, but with an edge to it. Roasted grains and hints of baked white fruits. Great brown ale.

Hoppy. Malty. Dark. A brown ale that mixes up genres. Bit of Double IPA. Bit of stout tastes like chocolate and vanilla. One of the best American brown ales I have had.

Can pours out a brown with some red highs topped with a tan head. Aroma is of sweet caramel malts, and a nice hop presents. Taste is more of the malts a little nut along with some bitter hops kick.

dark brown, nice large beige head. Aroma is sweet and hoppy, with a nice maltiness. Flavour is hoppy, but very subtle, with a nice caramel. Wow, this is a great session beer, crisp, and flavourful, i could drink this all night!

Scored this in a trade with Scubarex. Many thanks! Pours a nearly opaque dark, nut brown from the can with a thin head that faded fast. Aroma is malty with biscuits and dough enticing you to come in. Flavor is very sweet and drinkable. Slightly roasted nuts (think dark peanuts) with crackers, biscuits, sweet blonde brownies, caramel and toffee all working well together. Dry finish allows the beer to go down easy. Great session beer that I can’t imagine anyone ever getting sick of.
