COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

can, pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is brown sugar, toffee, and carmel malt. Delicious bitter sweet malt with notes of chocolate and coffee. Finishes slightly spicey with notes of clove and pepper. Really nice sessionable brown ale.

Bottle thanks to brian23456 (BA)!
Transparent mahogany with a cream ring for a head. Nose has vanilla, plum, chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is a bit ashy, which creates a singular flavor in chocolate dust, also some minor coffee and nut. Pretty silky body, light bitterness in the finish but no hop balance to enjoy. Drinkable, sweet, and balanced, just lacking some nuance.

Pours a small tan head, good retention and some skinny stringy lace to boot. Clear brown brew with a pretty red hue. Nose is caramelly, lightly nutty and grainy. Medium bodied, pretty damn smooth, lightly creamy. Notes of roast, caramel, cocoa and faint bitter sweet chocolate , maybe some toffee notes as well. Finish is almost dry, roasty and lasting. One nice Brown Ale. footbalm delivered this baby. Thanks Eric!

Can: Pours a reddish brown, off white head. Aroma, caramel, brown sugar, and some earthy notes. Flavor, roasty, caramel, brown sugar, some slight smoky quality, and some earthy and citrusy notes. Pretty damn good.

Can thanks to the always-generous dchmela. Deep brown pour, nearly opaque in a pint glass. Tan/yellow head that starts big and pillowy but settles down after some decent lacing. Malty caramel, cocoa, roasted barley, cotton candy, and hops on the nose. Similar taste, but with surprising fruitiness as well... apple juice, perhaps? A tad nutty. Quite good. Nice light mouthfeel and low alcohol. That won points in my book. This is not a ’huge’ beer, but its all-around balance and drinkability are top-notch.

Filled with vanilla and barley/oat richness. It’s like a blend of doppelbock and oatmeal stout. Super, super smooth.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2008 Rich dark brown/black pour with a big lasting tan head. Smell is very smooth, and muted but molassessy and hoppy. Some roasty notes in there as well. Nice mouthfeel. Smooth, creamy and perfectly carbonated. Flavor is nice for a brown. Not intensely flavorful, but nice and malty, with some roastiness and oaty creaminess. Good sweet and mollassessy brown ale.

Courtesy of Ryan. Brown, minimal beige head, fades to ring. Huge caramel/crystal aroma up front, faint chocolate, hops seem a little old. Flavor much the same. Huge caramel, nutty character through the middle. Spicy/herbal hops in backend. Creamy/smooth mouthfeel.
