4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 MilkmanDan (1943) - Eagan, Minnesota, USA - JAN 15, 2006
Murky, deep brown. Nose lightly peaty, some caramel, bit of smoke. Hoppier than expected with some spicy and sweet earthy caramel. Great aftertaste, maple syrup sweetness hangs on for a very long time. Sampled from the brewery’s inaugural keg served at the St. Paul Winterfest in 2006.

Can courtesy of Matt7215, thanks Matt! This ale poured decidedly dark brown with a frothy mocha head. Spotty lace is left behind. The nose is all about the hops and is dominated by the cascades, and then matched with wood, milk chocolate and nutty notes. This tastes good! Sweet nutty chocolate, like nutella, with dry cocoa powder and fresh, leafy green hops. Sweet and bitter. Usually Brown Ales are too sweet for my general liking, but this is quite good. Creamy and long lived bitter finish. Yes please! Thanks for the opportunity to try this one Matt!

Draft at the Surly brewery, RBSG 2007. Dark ruby with a beige head. Malty sweet nose, nutty, a mild astringency is noted. Mildly sweet flavors of malt and nuts, a bit earthy, some creamy caramel hints. Velvety smooth body. A big brown, and a well done one at that!

Dark brown color pour with a foamy head. Roasted malt, toasty nuts, and a bit of coffee and caramel in the aroma and flavor. Pretty tasty for a brown ale, actually. A touch of hoppiness on the finish. Very good session brew!

Can sampled with Mad_indian, thanks to Faro99 for sending this to me. Pours Mahogany with a beige head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, slight roast, and piney hops. The flavor is sweet caramel, nuts, roast, and finishes with a citrusy bitterness.

Can from Pole Smoke #1 (Sean). Thanks. Another Surly that I have wanted to try for a while, and I have always liked brown ales alot. So I was as anxious to drink this one as the furious. Pours out a dark brown color with a tan head on it. Smell is full of roasted malts and sweet caramel. Taste is smooth and roasted yet somewhat refreshing too. Far too easy to drink, could become dangerous in large quantities. Need to get some more of this. Good stuff for sure.

From notes:
Pours a very dark ruby red/chestnut brown color with deep mahogany edges when held to a light source and a thin foamy tan head that quickly fades into a thing lasting ring. Minimal spots of lacing left behind.
The aroma is slightly bland and for me the least impressive characteristic of this beer. Plenty of malt in the nose with hints of oatmeal, chocolate, toffee and caramel.
Surprisingly hop forward that adds some crisp bitterness up feot balancing out by the mellow chocolate malt center. Slightly roasty with hints of bread, toffee and nut as well as a slight lactic creaminess. The bitterness lingers throughout into a roasty dry finish but this beer is very well balanced and easy to drink.

16 ounce can. Dark ruby color with a full, wispy light tan colored head. Light chocolate and grassy hop aromas. Very light chocolate and roast flavors, with hints of hazelnut. Smooth with a nice finish. Better than most brown ales, but still as a beer, it’s just ok.
