COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

UPDATED: DEC 13, 2007 12/13/07: Can courtesy of Vikingbeau. Aroma is better than it appears from my previous rating. Creamy, chocolate hop aroma. Mostly opaque, murky reddish brown body with a thin tan head. Sheet lacing. Quite a bit of flavor for only 5.1% ABV. I’d love to know what the caloric content is. A very enjoyable brew. Bender picks up 3 points from my earlier rating, all from aroma and appearance. Overall score dropped a point. 3/20/06: Not much aroma; a little faint chocolate malt. This is a dark brew (like coffee) with very little head. Very nice flavor; has some hops like a good American brown should. Chalky and chocolatety, perfect balance. Very nice finish; lovely. Can courtesy of fly. Body-ultra dark brown body with a lasting beige foamy thick head. Nose-raisin and rich. Taste-fig, big raisin, dark rich fruit, mysterious, oriental, light soy, light unami, caramel, scorched malts, light char/burnt, barley, oatmeal raisin cookies, very rich without being too sweet, very light chocolate powder, very light acid that works quite well. The fig/raisin dominates almost in a Belgian strong kind of way, and works very well. Damn solid brown ale that almost crosses the border into an American Strong Ale. Very nice.

Reddish brown with a thick, foamy faded white head. Dark brown malt aroma. Oatmeal, and creamy brown barley malt flavor. The oatmeal is really strong and the dominant flavor. A full malty aftertaste lingers for a lomg time.

At first I got caramel and cola aromas. Now I’m getting some more barley wine like smells like plum. Always sweet. Smooth and crisp. Taste is slightly hoppy and slightly bitter on the backside. Some candied sugar as well. Pours a deep brown color with a faint red hue. Almost opaque until you hold it up to the light. The smells are really entertaining but the flavor leaves a little on the table. All in all a good beer though.

Thanks to Stine for this one. Pours out a nice dark brown with a small off white head. Aroma is of vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and slight caramel. Taste is complex with a nice balance of many different flavors, light coffee, bittersweet chocolate, caramel, and some vanilla notes all come together rather well. As stated nicely balanced.
