COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Can sampled with stegosaurus, care of faro99 trade. Mahogany pour chocolate roast aroma. Taste is pretty much thesame with a hint of coffee. Alittle thin for my taste but good none the less.

(on can, thanks Yngwie and Gunnfryd) Dark, reddishbrown. Sweet rotten mashy sent, very unplesant. Some chocolate in there, but mostly just sourness and rotten peas. A bad batch like this should have been stopped by the brewery.

Can. Thanks to Stine for the trade. Pours a deep dark body with huge head. Aroma is of sweet malt with an hint of molasses. Flavor lays heavy with sweet malt - peaty, light hops and some light chocolate present. Very quaffable. Good beer from a can.

Brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma is a nice roasty-bready malt mix with some chocolate and molasses detectable. Flavor is a nice darker malt mix that has a good amount of caramel, oat, sugar, molasses, chocolate. Really good for a brown ale.

16oz can. Dark brown pour with a thin bubbly off white head. Oily lacing that quickly disappears. Aroma is malty, sweet, slight hop, vanilla. Flavor and body is somewhat light. Has a nice malty/nutty flavor with a creamy finish. I think I was expecting more from this beer but it’s still a good one.

Above average brown ale mainly because it presents more body and more flavors than most brown ales. The body is a dark brown underneath a small, but fizzy brown head. The aroma is slight, but what is there is malty with roasted grain and a bit of chocolate and very lightly hoppy. The flavor, though, is moderately sweet and lightly bitter and full of malt character raising tastes of caramel, nuts, toast. The finish is citrus hops. Medium body. Lively carbonation.

Black pour with a quickly diminishing dark tan head. Aroma is roasty like a porter with touches of hops hiding in the background. Flavor is roasty, chocolatey, tangy sweet, with a bite of hops in the finish. Nice body. This is no brown ale, but I’m not sure what it is other than delicious.

Oct. 2007 - I was really liking this one. Dark brown pour, nice head and lacing. Strong aroma of coffee, english malt and roast. As many stated, this defies style, part brown ale, part porter, part oatmeal stout...the best of each part. Caramel malt with roast, chocolate, oatmeal and nutty notes as well. Some sweetness, maybe bubblegum with a bitterness and even a sourness that was strangely pleasant. Wonderfully smooth and thick mouthfeel. Amazingly complex. Really excellent.
