Pint served at Poor Phil’s in Oak Park, IL. Brown pour with a little ruby tint through the glass. Showed a tan, foamy head, with some nice, bubbly lacing. The nose was roasted malt, with ground coffee and cocoa, nutty and earthy tones and a little toffee. The flavor added to these some malt sweetness and a nice, medium hop bitterness to balance. Nice, flavorful Brown. To be expected from Surly.

Can from Tyloanderso: Pours a deep brown with a thick creamy head and good lacing. Light aroma of toasted nuts, cocoa, and fusel. Malty and rich, with a surprising bit of bitterness to counter the chocolate and oat flavors. Really finishes well, making it a natural to go back for another sip.

Can from Tyler! Brown/amber color. Good head, and nice lacing. Smell is malt and some sweet hops. Taste is the same. Caramel gives it a sweet after taste. Smooth. Meduim texture. Top 3 in the brown ale catagory. Really good beer!

A big thanks to theisti for bringing this one back from Minnesota for me. Pours a clear beautiful ruby/brown with a frothy, tan, diminishing head. The aroma is heavy roasted caramel malts, chocolate, light coffee and faint vanilla notes. So, yes the description on the can is actually pretty accurate, for a change. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and creamy-smooth. The flavor is sweet roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and a lightly bitter roasted finish. A tasty brown. Thanks again, Tim.

mtjoseph sent me this can o Surly, along with a slew of others in a beautiful box. Dark, dark brown with a big fizzy tan head. Nose is 9 types of maltiness. Major complexity in a malty way. I’d call it coffee cocoa and caramel, but that’s what the description says, and it’s not EXACTLY any of those individually. Great tang behind it all. Nice fuzzy mouthfull of mouthfeel. Great beer from the type of person that keeps me active on RB.

Can from Ed at Heritage. Pours a dark amber color, like a scotch ale, with a fluffy tan head. Smells and tastes of barley, oatmeal, maple, and faint hops. Finishes with black tea and caramel. Lacking balance and an element of sweetness.
