COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Sample at Brewnosers’ meeting April 2008. Brown colour with a mostly lasting frothy off-white head. Chocolate, citrus, coffee, and molasses aroma. Chocolate, bready, earthy, and coffee flavours with a citrus and piny bitter finish, medium bodied, rich, and lightly chewy but refreshing.

Thanks to HawkEye19 for this beer. Poured mahogany with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma of piney earthy hops wtih a bit of fruity sweetness. Flavor is surprisingly dry and hoppy up front, with notes of earthy grassy hops. Flavor shifts a bit to a light fruitiness with a bit of molasses... not as chocolatey as the can advertises, but more reminiscent of a doppelbock. In fact, as I drank this, I couldn’t help but wonder how close I’d come to the taste if I mixed a slightly above-par session IPA with a decent doppelbock. The sweetness came out more as it warmed, adding layers to the complexity. I imagine that if I had drunk this cold, I would have gotten nothing but dry bland hops. Became very complex and tasty as it approached room temperature, but the somewhat one-dimensional introduction to it I got when I poured it at cellar temperature kept my overall impression only mildly above par. A beer I will have to revisit as I go through the four-pack.

Dark brown pour with brown head thick head. Nice nose to toasty malt. Flavor was sweet with a touch of hops that blended into a nice carmalized sugar finish. Medium body and great texture. Really great brown ale!

16 oz. can, courtesy my brother. Nice ruby brown pour with a medium light beige head. Dark caramel aroma, complemented by piney and spicy hops. Smooth mouthfeel,. medium body and carbonation. Dark roasty flavors dominate, but a healthy dose of hop bitterness provides balance. A very good brown ale, distinctive, with bolder flavors than the usual example.

Poured from tap with a dark brown and ruby red color with an off-white head which left good lacing behing. Aroma is light caramel malt, lots of hops a light dark fruit scent, coffee and some chocolate. Stars out with a bitter coffee and chocolate maltiness which then moves into a sweet prune, kinda raisin flavor and ends with a bitter roasted malt bite as well as some bitter hops. Good mouth feel to the beer as well a a moderate carbonation rate. Overall is a pretty good beer.

Can, chris_o shindig. Dark copper brown with thin off-white head. Nose is sweet, sickly. Mouth is sweet with some sour taint to it. Keeps sweet with some metallic cannyness towards the very finish.

Tasty and well-put-together dark ale, rich enough to sip and ponder but just light enough to gulp if you want. Pours dark brown with amber-red highlights, tall and lovely tan head. Nose is lighter chocolates with some sweeter notes like cola and sugared coffee with cream. Flavor offers a nice balance of roasty, moderate sweetness and an equally moderate, sneaking bitterness. This all rides on a soft and creamy, fairly thick mouthfeel. Would be a natural match for a nice cheeseburger.
