4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 arrogantb (899) - Denver, Colorado, USA - DEC 13, 2009
Bender is a very, very dark brown beer. The head is a coffee-stain color and bumpy around the edges. It smells like chocolate milk as well as oats, mmm. The taste is really, really good but I can’t liken it to another flavor. The mouthfeel is very smooth. I don’t usually like brown ales but this one is a standout beer. I also really like the 16 ounce cans Surly uses, nice.

16 oz. can courtesy thebeardedbrewer shared with the exec board. Pours brown with small, khaki head. Nose of chocolate and roast with a touc hof hops. Ok, a lot of hops and some coffee. Lots of roasty, burnt flavor with some chocolate. Good bitter melds with the roast. Good beer. Stone XI-esque. . . kinda.

Nice hop aroma found in the same “location” as in the Darkness; if it were a 3D object the hops in the aroma would where the engines are in the Star Trek Voyager if you flipped it upside-down, with the bulk of the ship being the malt & everything else. Subtle notes of vanilla & chocolate. Flavor composition is like the Darkness as well in that each flavor comes at you separately, rather than as one mixed substance; works very well in these instances. Mouthfeel is very smooth with just the right amount of body. Great finish.

Sampled next to the coffee bender. Dark opaque brown colour with small head. Not a huge beer, but a pretty good brown. There’s a bit of chocolatyness in both aroma and flavour. I’m glad to see this going all over as it would be a great choice next to the typical beers in the area.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Nephilium (867) - Ohio, USA - OCT 24, 2007
Very slight chocolate aroma, and pours a dark reddish-brown with a thick slightly off-white head. A nice creamy mouthfeel on it, a touch of sweetness to begin, and then a coffee bitter finish. I just wish I could get this around me.

[can] Pours deep brown with a moderate off white head. Aroma is strikingly hoppy, which is quickly overtaken to bittersweet chocolate and burnt caramel. Flavor is really rich and nice, and very well balanced. In the end, the bittersweet chocolate takes over most of the flavors and the hops offset the sweetness with a good bitter finish.

Now this is a first...canned. A nice gift from jarspag. Aroma is a little hard to pick up, but the carbonation lifts a nice bittering hops smell with a nutty malt scent. Mostly toffee and cream in the flavor with a nut-brown background complimented by the obvious oats. Quite carbonated, finishes crisp and hoppy on the palate, very easy to drink. Reminds me of a Newcastle on steroids.
